I rarely ever fix Jordyn's plate, she does that herself. I don't know that i have ever had a problem with her not putting enough on her plate. Now there will be times when I will make her take a vegatable that she doesn't want, like at Thanksgiving I made her take a small scoop of corn and she had to eat it all. She will go back for second sometimes, but she tends to eat many small meals a day because of her activity level so I don't stress eating 3 main meals a day, I let her eat when she is hungry, but she still needs to eat dinner like when we have a family meal. I do try to make veggies that she likes so she will eat them. I was really picky as a kid and remember my parents always making me try things that they knew I didn't like. It never changed my mind as to whether I liked them or not, but I remember how much I hated being forced to eat things I didn't like, so I tend to not make Jordyn eat things she knows she doesn't like. I will make her try new things on occassion to see or if its been years since she has tried it I'll have her try a bite just in case though.
I don't force anything on Kristen either. She detests beets but I like them. So I make them for me. Everytime I ask her "Are you sure you wouldn't like to try? Even a piece the size of a pea?" and if she says no, I drop it. She is getting better with asparagus, she will eat a few spears but without the top part, she doesn't like the tree part. LOL To be honest she is much more adventurous with her Dad which is okay with me. They look up recipes for weird fruits and veggies on the internet then buy them. They bought fennel then didn't know what to do it with it. LOL Wish they'd phoned me.
I figure if her biggest handicap in life is that she doesn't eat beets or raw tomatoes I think she'll be okay. I won't touch turnip with a 10 foot pole and I've survived.
1. What size portions of food to you put on your tween/teens plate? Do they normally go back for seconds?
I serve my son balanced, healthy portions based on recomended serving size. He is not permitted to go for seconds (a very unhealthy habit for anyone to get into).
2. What are your meal rules--do you make them finish their meal, is it not a discussion, do you have to negotiate how many more bites? Do you make them eat veggies?
I do not force my child to eat all his meal, but I do expect him to eat balanced. Meaning that he eats a little from everything on his plate. I have never had a problem getting ds to eat his veggies.
1. What size portions of food to you put on your tween/teens plate? Do they normally go back for seconds? **I give my DS 11.5 approximately the same size portion as I eat. I make him wait for seconds until the rest of us are almost finished, and then if he still wants more, I'll give him a spoonful of whatever it is. He often asks for seconds on salad, which I will let him have. Sometimes he'll just grab fruit instead.

Do you make them eat veggies? ** I don't make him finish a meal, but he usually always does. I don't have to force him to eat veggies because he loves them. He's really a great eater. There isn't much he doesn't like. If he is having a rough dinner night, then he forgoes dessert.
Now my 7 year old DS is another story....he's a TERRIBLE eater....T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E!!
Ohhhhh.. This is quite the issue with ME - I try not to make it one with the kids but I'm not sure I'm succeeding. Both my kids are SKINNY. the doctor has told me they could both stand to gain some weight but I don't want to force food on them. I serve them breakfast (oatmeal, eggs and toast, French Toast sometimes) with fruit which they eat a little of. I pack their lunch (sandwich, fruit, yogurt or string cheese, and pretzels, sesame sticks or something similar) about half of which they eat. They get a snack when they get home from school (usually fruit and a carb of some sort or a dairy like yogurt). They are still just sticks. I shifted to 2% milk from skim at the doctor's suggestion and try to make healthy food available but they just don't eat much. I don't make them clean their plates but I serve them a slightly smaller than adult size portion and they have to try a little of everything. the doctor helped me out here and told my daughter that all kids going into kindergarten and older have to try one bite of everything on their plate, chew it, and swallow. After all, as you grow, your taste buds grow and you never know when you might like something. Oh, and they HAVE to finish their milk. I figure it's the only way I can get some calories into them and at least they get some protein that way.
