Not sure if you all have heard about this, but a MASS school is banning tag & chase due to injuries!

I think it's a sad, sad world we live in.

The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn.

I posted this on the DYK thread over the weekend but last week my 15 yr old son was playing freeze tag or something similar at the high school after cross country practice...who'd think teens would still be doing this? Anyway, he was headbutted in the chin on accident, splitting it wide open. (I was able to practice my art of 'butterflying'). Anyway, my first thought was "Oh no, if the school finds out they'll ban it here!" LOL! I think it's ridiculous to ban these games..they teach reflexes, eye contact, self-control. Sure some kids will get hurt, but if parents weren't so quick to be SUE-HAPPY would this even be an issue? How many of us fell out of trees or something similar and broke arms as kids? Our parents just shook their heads and told us to be more careful next time. Pretty much what I told my son. Accidents are part of growing up and we quickly learn how to avoid them next time. Do we want our kids growing up thinking incorrectly that the world's focus is their safety? Or do they need to learn to keep their eyes open and be aware of what's going on around them?

I think it's just another symptom of our litigation-happy society...always trying to place blame for everything!

This is why we live in a world with so many children who don't know how to play, always needing an adult to entertain them.

Gee! My dd fell down the basement stairs here at home. Maybe we should ban stairs? My other dd broke her collarbone falling from a slide so those should be banned to! And how many kids get hurt playing football, soccor or basketball? Life is full of opportunities for accidents to happen. Scrapes, bruises and bumps are just part of growing up and living. You can even be sitting on your sofa and have something bad happen to you. There was a guy here who was killed when a semi missed a turn and went thru his front window. I say that they should lighten up and let kids be kids, for God Sakes!

I think it's too bad that we live in a world where every little thing you do can become a lawsuit. Now we have to ban all the favorite childhood games at schools because someone may be injured? Our school took away dodge ball and the kick balls from the playground because someone was hit with one...it's a soft ball...and you know those kids play rougher at home. Or maybe they don't. Maybe the kids getting hurt are the ones who constantly stay in the house watching tv and playing video games and they don't know how to play. Are we going to have to take away baseball and softball? How about volleyball? Football? Will our schools only allow kids to stay inside and watch videos about exercise? I think it's ridiculous that the minority makes such a fuss about everything and the majority has to suffer.

I think it is going to lead to children spending recess just standing around

I'd rather they banned dodgeball.

Generally I think its gone too far, although I read an interesting post on this subject from a teacher. She claimed that a vast majority of kids didn't know HOW to play these games. That in tag its not necessary to body tackle someone and that in red rover you don't sent the biggest kid against the smallest. With our emphasis on bullying and taking action, every time a child is tackled in the school yard it involves often the principal and the teacher and lots of meetings outside of the recess, taking away from valuabel teaching time. So I guess I can see that point as well. Teachers are there to teach our kids academics and I suppose should not be spending that time teaching them good sportsmanship or the basics of safe play. That is something you would HOPE most kids learn at home and through play outside of school, but I guess lots of kids don't. However I think accidents are just part of life and learning what is acceptable behaviour.

I wonder how much of their decision to do this, came from stupid parents looking for ANY opportunity to file a lawsuit!

I think it is pretty sad when our schools have to watch very closely ANYTHING and EVERYTHING our kids MIGHT do, just in case they MIGHT accidently get hurt and a parent might look at it as an opportunity and sue the school!

UGH! Some parents need to get a life!
