I don't have strong feelings either way.

I am torn. In general I don't think it really deters crime and there is such a chance of making a mistake and executing someone innocent (you hear about cases all the time), but then there are cases of child murderers (we have one or two in Canada) who will never be released, have no remorse and in fact seem to enjoy taunting people about it. They really are a waste of space, we are paying for them to be fed, housed, educated and to live for many years. Would we be better off without him? Am I qualified to say who is worthy of life and who isn't? So I really don't know. We don't have it up here but of course I think the gut reaction of most people to a horrific crime is "kill him", but I'm not sure its a very practical solution.

I'm not in favour of it. There have wrongful convictions, one case up here where the police fudged the evidence just to get a conviction and even when the person is clearly guilty I feel is is an easy way out for the criminal; he doesn't have to live with his concience or the judgement of other criminals. It also goes against my religious beliefs.

I am opposed to the death penalty for many reasons.

1) The police and courts have made too many high profile mistakes. If justice was swift too many innocent people would have been put to death.

2) It is too expensive to execute someone. It is far less expensive for the guilty person to spend the rest of their lives in jail.

3) The government shouldn't be in the business of killing people.

"What about in cases when the convict admits to the crime and is definatly guilty??"

The problem is that capital punishment is legal, or it is not. I do not believe that the government is capable of crafting laws where only the guilt are sent to be executed. The judicial systems has failed too many times.

If they are guilty, let them rot in jail. If they are innocent, they may have a chance to eventually prove it.
