I absolutely do not believe this should be a mandatory vaccine.

While I think in theory this is a fantastic idea, the reality is that this is a new vaccine and hasn't been tested in the long term yet. I refuse to let my daughter be a guinea pig for some big pharma company. There have been too many products rushed to the market (that rotovirus vaccine and items like that Nuvo-ring birth control) that have resulted in death or serious health problems. 2-3 years down the road if it's been proven safe then I'll leave the choice up to her. Like the other posters said, it's not exactly spread through casual contact and isn't about to cause a widespread epidemic of anything if we take the 'wait and see' on it.
As for Texas mandating that these kids take it, in case anyone hasn't already heard: The Governor's former Chief of Staff is now the one lobbying on behalf of the vaccine maker, so there's a bit of political implications to this new law. Who's getting all the money in THIS deal?
Denise
I do not think that the government should mandate it, but I can also see the benefit for some girls of it being mandated. We all know that there are parents out there who do not do anything more than they are required to do and their children would probably be more at risk at an earlier age than others.
I just think that the long term side effects need to be be carefully studied before it is mandated. I will consider it for my girls in a few years and my oldest maybe sooner as she will be going off to college soon.

As many of you know, I live in TX and have a 6 grade girl--ahhh double whammy.
Just a thought I've been wondering about in regards to this vaccine being for a sexually transmitted disease...when the time comes to actually get this series of shots WILL YOU be telling your young girls what it's for? I ask this because when they get other shots it's not like we sit them down and explain what each shot it for and what disease it prevents...
I've already posted that I'm taking a 'wait and see' attitude on this but if you DO decide to have it given, do you think you'd explain what its for or just have it given?
This question is for all of you, not just the PP!
Denise
Denise, you asked a good question, and although my primary reason for not opting to get Kayleigh vaccinated is medical, the issue also comes up that my getting her vaccinated at this point would make it seem like I assumed she would be promiscuous or sexually active at a young age.

I will be talking with Kristen about it.
No, I don't think it should be mandatory. It is not something that you can catch like chicken pox. Plus, I think with the vaccine being so new, we need WAY more time to make sure that it is completely safe. I'm going back and forth on whether or not to have my girls vaccinated. I'm not against vaccines, I think they do a lot of good - but I AM nervous about a newer vaccine. They just haven't had time to study the long-term effects it may have.
