I think that there must be a fairly active homeschooling community in this general area because when I have days that are school days and I'm not working, if I have to go to a store or someplace, I see a fair number of kids out with parents during the school day who are definitely school aged children, so I'm guessing they are homeschooling families.

My experience with homeschooling acquaintances is that pretty much all of them have their kids involved in way more extracurricular type activities than I do - scouts, music, sports, dance, craft classes, church/synagogue activities, etc so their kids are very actively socialized and I guess they have more time to do this than kids who are in typical school settings since they don't need 6 to 7 hours a day to get through their school curriculum.

I do believe different strokes for different folks. As long as the children are progressing I have no issue with how it happens. Our goal is to have an educated society. That being said we need all sorts in the world, we don't all want to be dr's or god forbid lawyers - we have enough of them already! lol

I think there is good and bad with everything. I personally don't care for unschooling and would never do it for all the reasons mentioned. However, I could totally see someone who is really into it do a bang up job. I could also see it ending disastrously. However, there are also disastrous public schools so I can't single out people who want to try something off the beaten path. I also wonder if sometimes it's more the mothers need to have her children around her than what is best for the kids.

In the end I can only really have any part in what my own children do. I'm satisfied with their situation and feel it is the best choice for them. I also don't believe the government needs to insert itself into so many private, personal things.
