Our Tuesday Hot Topic Conversation is about the ban that is becoming country wide regarding smoking in public places!

What are your thoughts on the "NO SMOKING" ban that is in effect in restaurants, and public spots.

The problem with letting business owners decide is it effects the people that work there. not everyone has the luxury of saying they will not work somewhere that allows smoking. I am a server and if one restaurant allowed smoking (the part of ontario i live in has been smoke free for 6 years) then they all would. I don't smoke and i shouldn't have to be exposed to it at work or then have to find another job where it isn't allowed.

I'll admit I hadn't looked at it from the employee's angle, definitely something to consider.

I honestly think that things would self censor over time though:

Well, I agree being a non-smoker so I'm a bit biased. LOL For over

I can where you are coming from as far as free choice goes. I know i have to go where the money is. Thank Goodness here it is not a choice b/c i believe if it is was then i would probably be out of a job. It is not that everyone smokes it is people tend to want to be accomodating so they perhaps they would go elsewhere for lunch if their friend was a smoker. DH manages a buffet restaurant about an hour away from our home. They only went smoke free a year ago. They always have very large parties that make reservations. He would often come home with stories of irrate customers being ticked off b/c they wanted to reserve a table in the smoking section for 40-100 people b/c they would have a couple of smokers in the party. These sections always filled up fast. DH got to the point where he would ask the person "Do you want to eat or do you want to smoke?" It is crazy but i have come to realize that people are crazy...LOL!
I know when we were a smoking facility is wasn't uncommon for staff to phone the restaurant to advise the manager they had a cold and they did not want to work in the smoking section for the evening. The management was always accomadating yet we had one staff member that after 10+ years just told them she didn't want to work in the smoking section anymore and Emma was told "too bad, everyone has to suck it up and take their turn."
If only it was banned altogether.
Thanks for your response.
