1. Since you're not a kid anymore, do you miss having a Summer Vacation? Why/why not? I do, but I miss it more from the college timeframe...I was working and playing hard at that time! During my school years I was going to Girl Scout camp every summer, became a junior counselor by 14 and was a full fledged counselor/lifeguard/swim instructor by 15/16. I was gone every summer and I loved it! I got to escape some major stress at home surrounding my younger brother.
2. What did 'Summer Vacation' mean to you as a kid? What was a typical summer like? BORING. Once I started working at camp it was much more interesting...I got to try smoking, drinking, all kinds of wicked stuff! LOL! Don't worry folks..I just sampled, never indulged!
3. Did your family ever take trips together in the summer, or some other sort of summer tradition? Where was something memorable you went to and/or something memorable you did in a summer? I remember going to deer leases with cabins, hunting arrowheads and stuff. The morning Pres. Reagan was shot, my dad was in a serious car accident and busted his hips. That was junior high, maybe 6th grade? He never really recovered enough to be adventurous so the trips kind of pootered out then.

1) Yes I miss having a summer vacation. It would be nice to have the time & money to actually have a summer "vacation".
2) Summer vacation was hanging out with friends at the pool, corner, or store. We had fun, but I really missed school as that was where I excelled!!
As I got older (16) summer vacation meant working full time.
3) We never went anywhere. My Mom was single and on welfare till I was in 4th grade. After that she worked full time for next to nothing!! My most memoranble summer was when I graduated from HS and took a trip w/ Mom and 2 girlfriends to VA Beach. Had a blast and met 1st Love!!!! No not DH (THANK GOD).
1. Since you're not a kid anymore, do you miss having a Summer Vacation? Why/why not? Yes!!! Free time!! Fun activities, what's not to love!!!
2. What did 'Summer Vacation' mean to you as a kid? What was a typical summer like? Camp and camping!! I always went away to camp, and my family would go camping.
3. Did your family ever take trips together in the summer, or some other sort of summer tradition? We would go camping all over the US, sometimes with the canoe club. Where was something memorable you went to and/or something We drove for the first time to Oregon and northern California and then north to B.C. what a long but fun trip!
Ramona Mom to 2 great kids and wife to one wonderful hubby since 1990!

I do have a summer vacation...why do you think I became a teacher??? ;o) (Actually, that's not true at all, read below.)
2. What did 'Summer Vacation' mean to you as a kid? What was a typical summer like?
Summer vacation meant a lot of boredom. Mostly my friends & I rode bikes & went to the city pool. I could only handle about 5 weeks of summer and we always had 12-13 weeks...yuck! Later on, when I heard about year-round schools where you get the same amount of time off just chunks in cooler months, I said that was made for me!

Before my mom died, we took an annual summer trip somewhere. We only took trips in the summer...never during the school year (that I can remember). We took a lot of beach trips, a couple trips to Virginia (grandpa's family) and through Tennessee on the way back, some trips to Texas, a trip just to Nashville, and Disney World when I was 9. After my mom died and until I graduated, I took one trip with a friend to the beach.
That stinks that you don't get paid year-round.
Before I started teaching, the district gave the choice of 10 paychecks or 12...I would've opted for 12, but when I started, they went to 12 only anyway. I just received my last paycheck for the 06-07 year, so that means I have 2 raises on my next check (one a month in my district)....my annual step increase (2 years experience now!) and a raise from the state.

DYK This year I'm opting for the 26 pay period option
DYK But I won't actually get checks year round, at the end of June in addition to my last check for the year, I'll get a check for 10 weeks of pay
DYK So my individual paychecks will be for less this coming school year
DYK I hope I get some opportunities to make a little extra money

2. What did 'Summer Vacation' mean to you as a kid? What was a typical summer like? I grew up on a farm so it wasn't all fun but there was berry picking, both tame and in the woods with my Grandma, making jam and jelly, gardening, preserving the garden stuff, playing the hay bales and helping make meals for the men during haying times, the Rodeo was 3 days of kid bliss with rides and animals and fun stuff, just hanging out, usually family coming to spend at least a month, lots of visitors, riding dirt bikes with my girlfriend.
3. Did your family ever take trips together in the summer, or some other sort of summer tradition?
1. Since you're not a kid anymore, do you miss having a Summer Vacation? Why/why not?
Not really. To be honest I find the heat and humidity bothersome. Never bugged me when I was a kid but it definatly does now.
2. What did 'Summer Vacation' mean to you as a kid? What was a typical summer like?
It ment swimming, friends, riding bikes, going to the ice cream stand on Friday night, drive in movies with my friends (my big brother would take us once every other week if we washed his car for him). Oh and going to the amuzement park once each summer.
3. Did your family ever take trips together in the summer, or some other sort of summer tradition? Where was something memorable you went to and/or something memorable you did in a summer?
No we never traveled. The amuzement park was always memorable. My son goes once a year with his friends now.
