Violent Kids
It's tragic enough to hear about kids being victims of violence or being raised in violent environments. There's another level of disbelief when the kids themselves are the perpetrators of extreme violence. A recent story about two 10-year old boys who, along with a 17 year old, severely beat a homeless man in Daytona Beach, Florida has generated a lot of reactions on the In the News message board. How does a 10-year old boy get to the point of committing such an act? Can violent kids always be traced back to violent parents? Neglect? Peer pressure? Or are some kids just predisposed to violent behavior?

Difficult question. I do think that some kids are predisposed towards violence. You hear of cases where good families have one kid out of control, where the other kids are "normal" but one is extremely violent. I don't know if its due to mental illness or perhaps some kind of a error in brain programming or what, but it does seem to exist. However in general I tend to believe that kids are what they learn. If that kind of behaviour is acceptable at home, why not in the community. I know that kids can get a pack mentality (as can adults) and do things in groups they wouldn't dream of doing by themselves, but beating someone to death is in my opinion way over the top. I can never imagine a scenario where that would happen.
Its very sad, but we live in a very violent society, where problems can be solved using violence and kids pick up on that but I do believe that parents can mitigate the effects if they choose to.
I agree.
I do think that some violent people are simply "born that way". However, I think family life/enviroment plays a far bigger role in the way someone turns out. If you are raised in a home where violence is an everyday occurance, you are going to grow up thinking violence is the way to handle any kind of conflict. You won't learn to use words, only your fists. I do think that some people who end up extremely violent (say a serial killer) have some form of mental illness usually coupled with a bad home life or violence in their own past.
I was listening to am radio this morning.
Great Topic!
I think it can go in many directions! I also believe that some kids are "predisposed" to violent acts.

Ramona Mom to 2 great kids and wife to one wonderful hubby since 1990!
For instance, Hannah's telling me about a girl that cuts herself. Hannah says, it's not that bad because the girl only cuts her fingers. See what I mean about being desensitized? Hannah's around it, it's not that bad, she's only cutting her fingers not her hands. It's just crazy. DH had to go over and over being desensitized with Hannah. She just didn't get it.
