I think it is ridiculous. Any 12 year old child has more then likely heard worse on the playground. It sounds like they want the child to grow up in a bubble. I do agree it should not have been shown in class w/o parental consent but to say she was traumatized is a stretch, don't you think?

I have not seen the movie but from what I've heard from other people it is very emotionally charged and while there is perceived sex, its not porn. Alot of people I discussed this with thought the violence and emotionality would be more harmful than the sex, but they don't really say what traumatized her in the article.

okay this is getting out of hand
One the movie should not have been shown. But a grievance should have been placed in the school not a lawsuit. This is pushing it.

Unbelievable that a teacher would show this movie at school!!!! Apart from the subject matter--no 12 yo would even like this movie, I don't think!! What was she thinking?

Of course, suing the school is stupid too.

I would have gone bananas. Unfortunately, often sueing is the only way to catch the attention of the school. Chicago has the largest school district in the nation, and they don't care about small incidents. I would probably give the money right back to the district, it just is a way to get the attention this case deserves. This has been all over the news and talk radio dials here in Chicagoland!!!

My son would have walked out of the classroom if it was shown here. He's done it in the past for other movies that "bothered him". He usually just goes to the guidance office and tells them why he's there. Personally though, I would very much object to an R rated movie being shown to a room full of 12 year old students. But I wouldn't sue. That sub wouldn't be teaching anymore, but I wouldn't sue.

I agree with everyone else that I would have a fit beyond fits if my kids were shown ANY R rated movie in school. But one about a homosexual relationship? What was that teacher thinking? Or was she just trying to push her own agenda?

I'd be furious and throw a major fit over that. I probably wouldn't sue, but I'm wondering if this family was just ignored over the issue and this was their only way to get publicity. Frivolous lawsuits are nothing new in this country and what a shame this family took this route. I have a feeling their lawsuit will cause more emotional distress to this girl than the movie ever could.

The lawsuit is ridiculous.

Showing the movie was also ridiculous, I'd really like to hear what educational value it had, and I'd love to hear a justification of why parents were not informed ahead of time that an R rated movie was being shown, isn't that for ages 17+ by movie standards?

I would be very angry if my child were shown this without my approval.
