Wednesday Wondering.......

With Summer Vacation approaching in a couple of months, I was wondering how your kids will be spending their vacation?

Connor will be spending a week at work camp with some other teens from our church. They go for one week and help repair homes of elderly and poor who otherwise couldn't have the work done. This year work camp is in our state, so he'll be about an hour away from home.

He will also spend a week with his grandparents on Cape Cod. They said that this year they would be taking him to the theater and then he'll just hang with his friend from next door.

Aside from that he'll hang here at home, take his guitar lessons, and spend time at the city pool and hanging with friends.

As far as keep up his academics, I've never had to do that with him. He does read a lot for pleasure during the summer months but aside from that we don't actively work on anything.

I work only part time and an hour or two here and there, so we work around my schedule, the kids will be home all summer.

Mackenzie is going to Girl Scout Camp for a week and Nick is 'almost' accepted into the Colorado State Trooper's camp for a week (they're the same week, how lucky was that?)

We're driving to Texas for business/pleasure the first weekend of June and again possible in July. We'll probably do camping, river rafting...fun family activities since this may be our last summer in Colorado.

As for school, I do have some homeschooling computer programs for grammar, punctuation and reading for meaning...I may ask them to do one hour a week just to keep their skills sharp. Nick's a huge reader but Mack is just now seeming to read for pleasure at bedtime. I don't think I'll push it too much but it will definitely be there a bit!

My kids summer is booked to the hilt. Dd is going away to sailing camp in June. We also have a trip to Michigan planned as well. Then, we are going to a Song Festival in Indy, the next week she and her brother will join her cousins on vacation with my mom and aunt. They expect to be gone for 3-4 weeks, the are going S Dak, WY, MT and Co. We jsut took our vacation over spring break. Then they will go to my dad's house in Michigan for a week. Add in tennis lessons, tae kwon do she takes it and teaches it!!, flute and a trip or two to Wisconsin, and our time is gone. She does do reading everyday but Friday and I used to give them worksheets, I let them decide now. We also hope to have a few workshops through scouts, etc...

Our big summer trip is to Disney July 11-20 for Rachel's u10 AAU basketball tournament since we'll probably take a few days afterwards for a "real" vacation. Beforehand, the girls are doing either soccer camp, lacrosse camp, basketball camp or summer day camp. I don't try to push any academic stuff except summer reading/math packets since I want the girls to have some down time. Yeah, I know bad of me but all of us deserve a break sometime IYKWIM?

Kristen will be spending 4 weeks in summer camp (volleyball, photography, theatre and riding), one week of which is sleepaway camp. The rest of the time will be split between her Dad and I, with us each taking 2-3 days per week, depending on the schedules. We're not planning any big vacations this year, just hanging out and hitting the festivals and fairs in our region.

Oops, forgot to mention the keeping up the skills part. To be honest we don't do anything. We will be reading Harry Potter this summer but that's it. I find with her being in camp all day for alot of the summer its like me working all day, the last thing I want to do is come home and work some more. I also find that with the review they do she is bored out of her tree.

A few years ago I went to Sandwich, MA with the executive team from my PTA. We had a fantastic time there. What a beautiful place.

My 13 yo ds is going to a johns hopkins cty camp for 3 weeks for engineering.

My 10yo dd is going the same time to gymnastics camp. They'll both be within 30 minutes of each other in pennsylvania.

DH and I are going to Nevis for a week during that time... woohoo! Their camps are close to my parents so they can be the emergency people.

Other than that we'll hang out, swim in our pool, going crabbing, fishing, to the movies and a lot of loafing.

My dd's gymnastic schedule picks up in the summer so she'll be doing that.

I try to do a few things here and there to keep there skills up - math and science. We also participate in the summer reading program at the library. Makes the library the reason they read not me. ;) I'll probably do some museum trips and similar things.

They are so busy during the school year that I like things to be a little more laid back during the summer. Evan will have swim practice every day for an hour or 1.5 hours and Megan will have gymnastics camp 3 mornings/week. Evan is also going to do 2 or 3 weeks of sleepaway camp at the end of August. We're headed to Steamboat Springs to vacation with my parents, my brother, and his family over 4th of July weekend.

I always say we're going to have a laid back summer and we always end up running all over the place.

Personally, I'm still trying to get through spring! Sports are ramping up, Megan's birthday is next week and with all the end of the year stuff at school, I'm trying to take things one step at a time.
