Wednesday Wondering.......

With Summer Vacation approaching in a couple of months, I was wondering how your kids will be spending their vacation?

With Summer Vacation approaching in a couple of months, I was wondering how your kids will be spending their vacation? Camps, home, at a sitter, with family, etc.....

Aly has 22 days left of school!

She is doing 2 4-day long camps. One is at her school and is 3 classes in the mornings--she is doing Sewing, Taste of Mexico, and Grossology. The other camp is one class 4 afternoons and she is learning about Ancient Egypt.

Otherwise, we will be doing lots of library programs.

Since I'm a teacher, I get to be home with her all summer.

Also, how do you keep their academic skills up during the summer? Do you do homework/school work? Do you make them read consistently? Or do you just let them have the break?

She's going to read consistently whether I make her or not. Otherwise, it's just break-time. Last year, she did 3 weeks of enrichment. They took the highest students from 3rd grade and did enrichment activities to help prep them for high-stakes 4th grade testing because the more Advanced students there are from a school, the more money they get. (They also have a camp for the weakest students, to help bring them up to passing.)

The girls go to summer camp the last two weeks of August. Tegan is going to Ottawa with her pathfinder group for from June 28-July 4th. We will then go camping for a week from July 16-23. Dh will have two days off before and after we are gone. We will do the same August 6-12th.
The girls also spend a few days with my sister over the summer. My parents live across the street from us and they have a pool so they spend alot of time there as well.
As far as school goes Tegan reads and writes on her own because she enjoys it. Kelsey is made to read but not everyday in the summer and she writes on her own. I feel summertime is a break for everyone so i don't push the academics over the summer. They are both good students so it isn't really necessary.

Hannah goes on a week long extreme adventure camp with the youth group from church, we go out on our in-laws boat on the San Juan Islands here in Washington State, we plan on going on a road trip to the Oregon coast, along the way we'll stay at various timeshares, we plan on camping with our friends and their kids. That's about it. I think. We don't do academics in the summer. We're too busy having fun.
