I Was Wednesday Wondering....

Do you worry about your kids weight? Do you have kids on diets? Do you watch what your family eats and make sure they get enough excersise?

In a world were obesity in kids is quite high, what steps, if any, do you take to assure your child remains healthy?

Sorry I missed this yesterday...better late than never.

Do you worry about your kids weight?
* * * Up until this year, I've had to buy Quinn (13 yo) slim sized jeans. I use to worry that he was under weight because when he was younger, he was either off the chart or in the lower percentile. But the doctor would always tell me not to worry because he is so healthy. He has finally started bulking up a little. He's out of slims & in regular sized jeans. I was always afraid that he would get picked on because he was a bit on the small side. Turns out he's on of those 'leader' type kids. Currently he in a size 16 regular jeans. He has long legs.
Do you have kids on diets?
* * * No.
Do you watch what your family eats and make sure they get enough excersise?
* * * Yes, I do make sure that we eat healthy. I try to watch our salt intake & rarely serve canned veggies. I'm also adamant that we have at least 2 veggies with our suppers & always have fruit in the house. We do have pizza night & nights when we have fun foods. (eg: fondues) I go for a brisk walk just about everyday. I also get outside & do yardwork. I play teterball with Quinn & his friends. (it's a good workout) However, I am overweight despite all that I do. It's in my genes.

In a world were obesity in kids is quite high, what steps, if any, do you take to assure your child remains healthy?
* * * I just keep encouraging him to play outside, ride his bike & take him to the skateboard park as often as I can. I encourage him to play basketball (practice started Tue. night). Occasionally I will have to tell him to log off of Rune Scape & go outside. Sometimes he will get on there to help a friend out & gets real involved chatting & doing whatever it is that they do on there. I encourage him to develope good eating habits. Lucky for me, he is the type of child that isn't too picky. He will try anything with an open mind. Just in the past few months he has started liking grilled onions, grilled pineapple, fresh, stir fried brussles sprouts & asparagus. He's always loved broccoli & greens. (Lucky me) About the only veggies that he doesn't like is lettuce (no salads) & lima beans. He's not a big soda drinker. I'll buy him a 6 pack of 16 oz. Cheerwine every other week. He usually drinks an average of 3 in a week. Mostly to 'kick start' his mornings. (I figure that it's no worst than coffee) He drinks a lot of water. I make iced tea (1/2 gallon) a couple of times a week. (Not a lot of sugar in mine) He has a glass with his meal. And when we go out to eat, both of us get water most of the time. Rarely do we get tea or him a soda. (I haven't had a soda of any kind in almost 4 years) He's not a big milk drinker though. When he does drink it, he stirs choc in it. But, he gets his calcium from other places. Broccoli, spinach, cheese, ice cream, other dairy products & etc.

Do you worry about your kids weight? Nope

Do you have kids on diets? Nope

Do you watch what your family eats and make sure they get enough exercise? Yep, I think we get enough exercise and eat healthy meals. I do buy junk from time to time. Last time Hannah and I had fast food was a couple of weeks ago. DH refuses to eat fast food. He says it will kill you. I think we eat pretty good compared to most.

In a world were obesity in kids is quite high, what steps, if any, do you take to assure your child remains healthy? I think in order for Hannah to remain healthy I need to set an good example by excising and eating good foods. I know when I'm eating kit kats I can't vary well tell Hannah not to. :)

We're a physically active family and have pretty good eating habits too. So, no, it really isn't something that we worry about, but we do try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many relatives in both mine and DH's families have weight problems and illnesses. Junk food and fast food aren't forbidden but it's not something that we allow often.

As a child, my husband was very overweight, so we have always been a very health-concious family. All of my children are involved in sports, and we bike, hike, and shoot baskets as a family. We eat mostly health foods, and none of our family has a big issue with sweet or fattening foods. Mary-Claire (9) actually needs to gain a good bit of weight. Kiran (12) is also very thin, and Colton (12) is pretty average. He had to gain some weight to play football this year and he has been working out frequently. I, luckily, have a high metabolism, and my husband is now average.

oh boy... tricky subject in my house. Dh and I both need to lose some weight and eat healthier. I need to lose 10 - 15 lbs and dh needs to loose about 80. Our kids on the other hand could stand to gain some weight (dr said). They used to follow the percentile on the chart almost exactly last year, they dropped for the second time. The dr wasn't overly concerned but said they could stand to put on a few lbs. They both wear slims and I have a hard time buying pants/skirts due to waist size. It's hard dealing with both situations. I try to emphasize health and not weight but it's hard.

Dh, dd, and I need to exercise more and ds (Evan) doing great. He swims 3 - 4 times/week on a team. That adds up to about 5 hours/week. I try to walk to school and back with them as often as I can.

I'm a couple days late on this. Both my dc are skinny as rails. We emphasize balance in our diets (and lifestyles). We stay active but not obsessively. We try to eat right, but don't nag about it. I think the key to health is having a healthy level of self-esteem, a good working knowledge of foods and additives and how they affect your body, and a lot of self-control. The last one is the most difficult for everyone, I think. While my kids are in great shape (as I was at their age!), my self-control seems to be ruled by the variables of juggling adult life. So I'm not quite as "healthy" as I should be.
