What roll does your DH/SO play in your home? Does he help with the kids & housework, or does he just allow you do to it? we're about 50/50 depends on the day. :) He does way more for me than I do for him. It's his personality, the way he was raised. He can cook, clean, he takes care of the yard, takes Hannah to various events, if she needs help with homework, he's there........He's a people pleaser, likes to make people happy. I'm very, very lucky. At least that's what the women that know us say.
DH's dad was self employed, always home, they went on vacations out on their boat every summer, for a month or so.
DH has brought this vacation stuff on over to our family. He's always planning the next place to go or see. He's very family oriented.
I grew up the exact opposite, my dad was always working, never around. We went on fabulous vacations, but he was mostly stressed out. He just could not relax and have fun.

I do think it was how he was raised.
DH doesn't do laundry, not that he can't but I like to do it. Then again, I don't mow the lawn.
That's how my mil is with my fil. She does everything for him. He is capable but she does it. This is how DH grew up. His mom did everything for DH and his brother. His brother doesn't lift a finger, DH does lots. They were raised in the same household but are totally different.
Maybe your dh will come home a changed man. I forget why is he in CA?
