I Was Wednesday Wondering....

How much cooking and cleaning does your tween/teen do? Do they do their own laundry? Change their own bedsheets? Do the dishes, clear their own dishes, etc....

Kayleigh dusts and vacuums her own room, folds her laundry and puts it away, changes her own sheets and clears her own dishes etc from the table

My two clean and vaccuum their own rooms every saturday (if they don't I'll do it for them and they don't want me in 'their space'). As for laundry, if they bring it downstairs every day, then I'll do it. If they hoard it for more than a couple of days then they have to wash their own clothes. We have the kitchen clean-up neatly divided into two even lists..which they alternate every evening. So they're both in there but they change 'lists' every night. Other than that, if we have a huge cleaning day Nick is usually the one vaccuuming the stairs and Mackenzie does odd jobs like straightening the basement and cleaning mirrors for me.

Cooking? If it can be microwaved or prepped in the toaster oven...he can/will make it. I have not let him cook on the stove just yet.

Cleaning? He is responsible for his room (closet included), making sure his laundry gets to the laundry room. DH wants them to start folding their cown clothes. I am not really ready for that. I am pretty anal about how I want the clothes folded. So I will fold and they can put them away. The clothes that belong on hangers, I lay across their beds and they will hang them up. He is also responsible for the kitchen and getting the trash out on trash days. He will launder and change his own bed linen. All 3 of my kids are expected to clear the table and wipe off their spot.

My family is big so we all do our share of cleaning! Each is responsible for clearing their own spot at the table, if the laudry gets downstairs I wash it they fold thier own- too many to worry about how it gets folded and they also put it away,my 11 year old dd helps her little brother and sister put thier clothes away(I fold thiers) and my children pretty much do it all with me so they vaccum and dust and unload/load dish washer, ect.!

As for cooking all the children love to bake with me and the 2 oldest girls ages 11 and 9 help to do prep work for dinner like grate the cheese or something like that! I put and take everything out of the over, but they do stir thing on the stove top for me. My oldest son age 15 doesn't spend very much time cooking in fact he rather not!!

Ummm. None? LOL She doesn't do her own laundry because with two of us that would be a waste of electricity and water. She doesn't do the dishes, we have a dishwasher which I load. She does take her dishes to the kitchen and is generally responsible for keeping her room half-way tidy. But to be honest she doesn't do much. However if I ask her to do things she will. She

As far as cooking goes, he likes to mix up a pumpkin pie & can do so without me helping too much. The only thing is he doesn't put it in & out of the oven. I'm trying to help him become more confidant with it. He's afraid of getting burned. Of course he likes to help me bake cookies & is more than happy to lick the beaters when I whip up frosting. He loves to grill out & is rather good at it. Better than some grown men that I know. He's not interested in chopping or cooking on top of the stove. He can use the micro well. Popcorn, Hot Pockets, hot cocoa & etc.
He doesn't wash his clothes or fold them. I do the washing & folding. If there is something to be hung up, I lay it out flat on his bed. He can do that. I've tried to teach him how to fold, but he's terrible at it. Sometimes I wonder if he's terrible at it so I won't make him do it. (Did anyone ever see the 'Everybody Loves Raymond' where Debra caught onto Raymond that he faked not being able to fold clothes, just so he wouldn't have to do it?) I realize that I need to teach him how to do laundry.
He strips his bed, I wash/dry the sheets & together we make the bed up.
He sets the table. Unless he's grilling out. We both clear the table together. I generally load & unload the dishwasher, but sometimes I get him to help me out. He can load it pretty good. When he unloads the dishes, he will put things in the oddest places if he doesn't know where they go instead of setting it aside & asking me. (Eg: vegs bowls in with the pots & pans)
I get him to daily go around our livingroom & pick up his stuff. Sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. He is messy & I have to stay on him to pick up after himself. I get him the Swiffer dust every day (just about). I get him to Swiffer the kitchen & bathroom floor every once in awhile. Also, he takes out the trash & is in charge of keeping the wastebaskets empty. Both, I have to remind him of. The kitchen trash can be heaped up & unless I tell him, it doesn't get emptied.
He helps with feeding/watering the dogs, guniea pigs & fish. Both of us clean out the gp cages at least once a week (sometimes twice a week). I often have to remind him to help with the critters.
We both do yard work together. He has to pick-up limbs & etc. while I go get gas. He does the riding mowing for the front yard, while I push mow it. Then I do the rising mowing for the back yard while he pushes. I do the weed eater (it's gas & sort of heavy) but he starts it for me. (For some reason, I can't start it up, but he can. Can't figure it out. ???) I've just started letting him clean the gutters out. If the leaves are dry, we have an attachment that fits on the blower. If they are wet leaves, he climbs up the ladder & I spot him. He also trims stray branches off the trees. I trim the bushes, while he loads them onto a tarp. We both drag them down into the woods. We both rake the leaves. He probably has to do more yardwork than the average kid. But it's just the 2 of us & we have almost an acre of land. He loves to work in the yard with me & does a pretty good job at it. (I sometimes have to go behind him with the push mower because he misses some spots.)
One more thing (sorry this is so long)...I make him clean the toilet & floor around it in the front bathroom (his bathroom). Because he sometimes misses & gets pee all over it & the floor! He misses so bad that there will be a puddle of pee around the bolt of the toilet. How can that happen?!

Hannah is capable of these things but doesn't do much.

She doesn't cook.

She keeps her room picked up, brings her laundry to the laundry room, sets the table, clears the table and load the dishwasher. That's about all folks.
