I posted a while ago about a movie birthday party and here's how it went. We ended up with 8 kids and 2 adults (dh and I). We took them to a chain diner type place at the local mall for dinner and then to see Flushed Away. They were very well behaved and enjoyed dinner. Evan (birthday boy) was a terrific host - made sure people had what they needed, talked to everyone, involved those that didn't know "the gang" from school, etc.) Then we went to the movie. Again, the kids were really well behaved and had a great time. Evan really enjoyed himself!!
This was his second celebration of the day. Since he's still in 4th grade, they still do celebrations at school. I took pizza and soda for the end of the afternoon. Sounds like a big deal but it really wasn't. I bought 2 pizza from the grocery deli (4.99 on Fridays) and had them cut in squares so everyone got two squares and a cup of soda. All for about $12 (soda was on sale too). I could hardly do two dozen cupcakes for that and the kids cheered when I walked in! Again, I was very proud of Evan's hosting. He served the pizza, went around a few times asking if people wanted seconds, and refilled soda cups too. I was floored!!! He never does stuff like that at home.
All-in-all a fabulous celebration for him and it's not even over yet. His real birthday is next Saturday and we're going to be at my parents for part of the day so he'll get his gifts from them that morning and then come home and get his gifts from us. Not bad for a soon-to-be 10 year old. I've explained that 10 is a special year and not every year is going to be like this so he's enjoying it.
