paperdoll cutout of mozart. All dd's written info is done & typed but as far as how to cut it out & dress it we're at a loss. I say we're because this is way too complicated for dd to do on her own. The directions are contradicting & confusing. The picture on the directions is totally different than the directions. Its due Monday & we have to figure out how to proceed.

Thank God she had all the written info done & typed which btw was very repetitive. The same questions were asked over & over again. Each question has to be answered in paragraph form which is worth 50 points. Most of the same questions were asked for something written on the back. There is absolutely no where to fit in his birth date & date of death.

If anyone has a suggestion we're open to it, she has one piece of oaktag so no mistakes can be made. I really have to find a place to buy oak tak so we have some here at home.

My dd found her solution. She came walking into the dining room where the table is spread w/everything for her project carrying a hugh piece of construction paper. On it she drew a head & a body w/arms & legs

you wonder whatever happened to just reading the darn book and maybe writing a brief synopis on it,Instead these kids have to be all creative and such.Drawing an oak tag pic of Mozart really does nothing to increase anyones understanding of the book or his life,If you are blessed with being creative you are lucky if not.....Have you tried teacher supply stores for the oak tag?I am not really sure what it is.When you say oak tag I think card stock paper that they sell in craft stores in the scrap booking section.I am guess that isn't right???I can no believe how many book projects Nik has to do.I though Gab's school was nutty on projects.Gab is in 7th grade and her book projects are not as elaborate.Plus she ususlly only gets one a nine weeks.Poor Nik has 6 more. What is the next one on?

The next one is for a Maine state book award book & we have no idea what the project will be. We find out Friday. There are no teacher supply stores anywhere near here so when we go to RI for xmas I will be looking for oak tag & buying some. Since Rhode Island School of Design is there I may be able to find some in the city. I will be buying a few sheets. Btw, its heavier then normal poster board & its very dark blue/gray on 1 side & white on the other. I haven't seen it anywhere & Staples didn't know what I was talking about.

I told Nik to be very careful picking her next book because I don't want her to get a book that is too long & has a big plot w/alot of different characters because who knows what the next project will be. I would send pics of the book cover & Mozart when we finish him today but I don't know how. Thankfully Nik had all her paragraphs & questions answered to be glued on this thing. I agree w/you writing a book report or review would be sufficient. Just the thought of so many more to go & I get depressed thinking about it. So far there hasn't been 1 that any kid could do totally w/out help so I don't see the point to all this.

Not paying tuition but we are paying for all the material to put these projects together.

You should have seen dd leaving this morning. She had her bag for PE, he backpack, flute for band & her big cut out of Mozart. The weather is miserable & she was worried about it getting wet & also where she was going to put it while in band. It won't fit in her locker & I told her she could either keep it w/her in homeroom & math or drop it to her LA teacher walking from band to her locker before homeroom.

I hope the next project is a bit more manageable, size wise. If she hadn't made it as big as she did it would have never had room to fit all 5 paragraphs on it, plus the title of the book & author, her name & decorate it & dress him to look like he should. There also was another 7 paragraphs glued to the back. I honestly don't see the point.

Nik is lucky you drive her,Gabby takes the bus.I can drive her if necessary, but she'd rather go with her friends. At least Gabby's Egypt project is all contained in a binder. She is actually done with her part of it.I spent close to $30 on that getting her paper stickers, sheet protecters and what not. Then the sparkley silver letters I got must have been from a different batch, becasue the colors are off.Not that I care and if the teacher says anything I will flip.Gab's info is correct and everything is spelled right,so I really don't care if the creative art part is perfect.Just curious what type of grade would a kid in Nik's class get if they wrote all 7 paragrapghs perfectly and it was really obvious they read the book, but for what ever reason they could not recreate their person? The class in L/A,not an art class. Not everyone is artictic or creative, plus they may not have parents who are.Plus in all honesty by sixth grade it should be the child's project. Why these teachers assign stuff that no 11/12 can do on their own is beyond me.Does Nik get projects in other classes?

Laura, the only project that Nik has been able to do alone was her 1st. because it was more writing & less art work except for the poster board & she used pics of things used for mummification. These last 2 were way too complicated & detailed for kids to do alone. I guess a high school kid could do it alone. There is a rubric for the character cut out & yes the art work counts. All in all there were between front & back there were 12 paragraphs. points are takin off for each things not done. For example if the cut out doll wasn't decorated to match somewhat the written description points are takin off. The cut out & the 7 paragraphs on the back done well & all questions answered & character resembling Mozart 25 pts., 5 para. complete & covered all required areas 50 pts. ,para. written using correct spelling, grammar etc. 15 pts., cutout & description are neatly presented, 10pts. students name visible on the front of the project is an extra 2 pt. bonus.

Nik is not artistic has never been artistic & while she came up w/the rough drawing the other night which showed some artistic progress for her I had to do the actual drawing on the oak board & since we had only one piece of oak tag I cut it out. With that I was nervous about making a slip while cutting. So kids that have parents that don't have a clue, or can't be bothered their kids are left to figure this all out on their own & according to Nik they either don't turn it in or get alot of points takin off & red marks on theirs. She thankfully hasn't had any in any other subject yet. The stuff we have to buy isn't cheap for these things as you know. I try to get as much as I can at AC Moore or Jo Anns w/coupons. So in answer to your question yes even the creative art part counts & when your talking about 25 pts. thats alot in the overall grade.

I rather ours were done like Gabby's are being done. Nik's are too time consuming & between the homework & tests they give there just isn't much free time left to work on these alot. Plus having it due the day they go back after Thanksgiving isn't fair, I'm sure alot of kids were away at family for the holiday weekend.

I'm not looking forward to getting the instructions & rubric for the next one which we will be getting on Friday. I can only imagine.

We live to close for Nik to take the bus, its just a bit under 2 miles.
