did your child(ren) stop using a booster seat? My ds will be 10 in about a month and still uses a booster because he's a pip squeak (about 4'5" and 63 lbs.). I would like to see him stay in it as long as possible but he'll be in middle school next year and I can't see making him use a booster seat then. We live in IL and the law is 8 years old or 80 lbs. He'll be in freakin' high school before he weighs 80 lbs. I just know it's not safe for him to be out of the booster and he's definitely not tall enough right now. I'm barely tall enough (4' 11") and I'm an adult.

I have a child like that too. Matthew just turned 9 and he is still in one. He is 4' 8'' but only weighs 52 lbs. He asked last week on his birthday when he can get out of it and I told when he turns 10. He is pretty happy in it so it is not really a problem . He is tall but his upper body is so thin I am afraid he would go flying out of a shoulder belt. Perhaps you could get a backless booster if he is worried about others seeing it.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with a "small" kid. He's in a backless booster already, as is his 6 year old sister (she's a little above average for her age 4' even and just over 50 lbs.). This brings up another issue I'll get to deal with when I let him go without a booster. "How come I have to be in a seat if he doesn't?" Yes, he's older but I've always told them the law is 80 lbs. (it's 8 yrs ir 80 lbs.) in order to keep them in the seats as long as possible. If I let him out before then, how do I explain it?

I would explain that the law says she must be in one until she is eight( that should buy you an extra year) and you say she must be in one until you consider it safe for her to be out.

My 9-1/2 year old is about 4-10 and weighs about 65 pounds. He has not been in a booster seat since he was 8. He always rides in the backseat, wears a seatbelt, and and our van has the high back seats for head/neck protection. We also live in Illinois.
