I don't pay my kids for chores. They do chores because they are expected to contribute to the household. They get an allowance because they need/deserve spending money and need to learn how to handle money.

Hello and welcome to the board!

I have 3 kids aged 12,11 and 10. We have a chore chart that rotates every 2 weeks. They are required to do those chores (for example: clean kitchen, vacumming various rooms, trash removal etc) AND their rooms. We have a cleaning service but if they don't keep their rooms picked up their rooms will be omitted from the service. I do all laundry (wash and fold) but they are required to put it away. I have been kind of lax about it but I am paying for it. They are starting to be lazy about their chores and I notice that I am reminding them more to do them.

We haven't given allowance because like Nancy's kids they know they get more out of me "ala carte". I think starting the new year we'll go back to allowance and I'll take ODS to get an account that has a debit card. He'll be 13 Jan 28th and its time he learned how to manage his money.

My DD is in charge of keeping her bedroom, playroom, and bathroom cleaned (well, she doesn't actually "clean" that one, I wouldn't trust it!) and we give her $5 per week. She also helps DH in the yard and with car washing sometimes so we'll slide her a buck for that!

Downside, she no longer trashes these rooms so it's almost just like giving it to her!!

Kurt (13) doesn't get an allowance, nor does he have set chores. He does his own laundry and will vacuum when I ask him to. He also has to keep his room clean, although that doesn't happen too often. He's pretty good with his money - better than I am (I actually owe him money at the moment!)
