What do I do?

I am also new to this whole site! I am so relieved that there is a place that might have the same moms and dads that know what I am going through. I have a 12 year old that is just the coolest kiddoe to be around. He has the biggest heart and just so sweet His biggest hang up is school. He has a learning disability and struggles with Math. I am sad to say that it is hereditary as that most of my family and my husband all had to struggle in school. He does excellent in other classes, small problems here and there. This year he was in Jr. High and failed math both in class and on the Taks test (I really despise that test). We have had him in special classes to help him but not every school he has been in has helped. Some teachers do not have the patience to help him. He gets so frustrated and just gives up. We got him into a summer tutorials. This class is so great, they do special computer programs to help them. But, I think he is just so impatient that he is still not "getting it" that it is a battle to get him there. We try to help and praise good grades and work that he has tried his best on. If there are any parents out there that know what we are going through and have any ideas that have helped, please feel free to offer any advice! He is a wonderful young man. He loves to read, he loves music, and has the most wonderful imagination. He is the only 12 year old that I know that loves Blues as much as me. He loves older artists Robert Johnson and BB King. He has a wealth of music knowledge. And has an appreciation for all music, old and new. If I could just get that same spark started or the right kind of help towards school there is no telling where he could take it. Thank you for listening to a mom that just needs a little help.

I have a daughter that struggles in math also. Younger but still. I hate that test also. Its not fair. Its not easy to get out of either. I take it you live in TX somewhere.
So do I. The city I live in offers a few places that might help your son. Its a couple days a week but it worked great for Jackie (my 11 yr old) We went to Kumon center. There are a few other places. But if you want to look around feel free to. I liked the center it worked on her schedule not anything else. It was also out of school. The school tends to be tools and teach this test. You son needs help learning the basics...... this place helps. Check it out. They do offer a discount so ask about it. There should be one close to you. Let me know if I can help in any other way. Hope to see you again.
Thank you so much for the advice and warm welcome. I am from small town west Texas, not the middle of nowhere, but we can see it from here..lol Our town does not have any outside school help. But in nearby Odessa and Midland the have places like Sylvian. I can do some research. Thank you, once again, for your help. I am a stay at home mom (domestic diva as I like to call it) and do not have many friends or other moms to relate to. I am not your typical mom. I kind of stick out here. So, finding all of ya'll was a god send!
Thank you,
MMU
P.S. your daughter is adoreable!!!!!
Welcome to our board. I am fortunate that I my DD does not have trouble in school but one of my friends DD's is finding it difficult. She has her in Kumon too I think or Sylvain. One of the two, Kumon I think. She's finding it helpful but I'll be honest, its not cheap. Its about $80/week for a two hour session, but sometimes you do what you gotta do to get them through. It unfortunate he hasn't been able to get the help he needs in school but if its anything like here they just don't have the resources, people or money.
Hopefully he can get a grip on it this summer. I'm sure it is frustrating for him, its been going on for a long time and his patience is wearing thin. But likely he just needs to get some success under his belt to motivate him. Its worth going to Kumon or Sylvain to get the evaluation and see where the problems lie. Good luck and hope you decide to stay around. Its a super board with lots of great ladies with wise advice.
thank you.
There are some places online that offer workbooks to help out at home. You might try that. there is a homeschool board here on IV. They might offer some specific places to go. I would start back at the beginning on where your son is having problems and focus on the next step. Let me know how it goes. Keep in touch.
Thank you so very much. I already love this board. I am just learning all of the things to do with Ivillage and boards. Ya'll have been so nice and welcoming. As i have told all of the other ladies you all are a god send. I am researching different places and people around here that can help. Unfortunately, the nearest places are 35 miles away, but, hey, small road trips are fun with him!I find it wonderful to have some really nice people to talk to here. Thank you!

I would suggest getting a high-schooler/college student to tutor you son. Maybe just a couple of times will do the trick. Good luck
Thank you for a warm welcome. I have talked to a bunch of counselors and teachers within all of his schools he attended. It starts off great and he gets help, but then towards the middle of school he just starts to understand and they stop and put him back into normal classes. I keep on them (actually they are tired of me) but he gets lost in the system. I am going to try to find a private tutor that he can maybe get some one on one help. Once again, ya'll have been so wonderful and thank you.

From this description, it sounds like he can succeed in a regular classroom if he has some extra support. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the school will help with that support, but maybe you can find a tutor that can work with him through the whole school year (and summer) for a decent price.
Welcome a'board! Good luck with everything!
