This Christmas, with the Canadian Dollar being so high, we plan to take a day or two and go into Washington or Oregon to do our shopping. Some stuff is just that much cheaper in the USA. We do have a budget that we stick to, and because ds's birthday is just days before Christmas, he knows that if he asks for something really expensive then it's a combined birthday/Christmas gift. He doesn't mind. He don't have any video game systems or a cell phone, and we've made the decision not to buy him any either. I did allow him to have my old digital camera, so he has that to play with.
His list so far:
Books
rechargeable batteries and a memory card for the digital camera
watch
chemistry set stuff (like new test tubes, etc)
Lego
a travel mug from Starbucks
specialty tea
some new games for the computer
an MP3 player (he doesn't care if it's iPod or not)
Most of the stuff is cheap enough that we can get him all of it, between us and grandparents. We are actually looking into getting him a lap top computer (something he'd never ask for because it's so expensive), because he's going to need one for high school next September. He uses Dragon Naturally Speaking for all his school work and our desktop is too old and doesn't have enough ram or a fast enough processor to handle the new version.
So it's out of necessity instead of just a want, but he'll be totally floored if he gets it because our usual "big gift" limit is about $200. But we'll see. It depends on what we can find.
Well we did the ipod video last year...at a whopping $240, this year she wants the newest ipod, I dunno even what its called but its $189 I think...big NO! The one she has is just fine. She's asked for clothes of course, and an docking station for her ipod. The biggest thing she wants more than life itself is a cellphone. None of us have them...yet! Gonna talk to Santa about that one. The other thing I'd like to get for both my girls is a Wii. we already have the ps2, but I like the wii because they actually have to be active to play with it.
