What's up with kids and rain jackets?

I do remember back to the days of being a 10+ year-old kid and how rain jackets were just not cool. But, my mother pretty much insisted I wear one, and frankly, I thought that was a smart idea when it's raining because otherwise YOU GET WET IN THE RAIN!
Why am I ranting? It's raining here this morning, and my kids didn't want to wear rain jackets to camp. It's warm enough that I didn't make a big deal over it, it's not supposed to rain all day, and they do have spare jackets and a change of clothes at camp if they get wet and change their mind.
But... I'm just curious... what am I missing here? When it rained, even as a teenager, I wore a rain jacket, cool or not. Why walk around wet all day? I don't get it. Where did the uncoolness of rain gear come from? Who started it? ;-)
Sherrie- you're in WA where it rains a lot, I've heard. Do kids where rain gear in your part of the country? Everyone else- what's up with your kids and rain gear?
Thanks for listening ;-)
Janet
As for when rain gear became uncool - I think it was us Washingtonians who started it ;-). We do get a fair amount of rain but you don't see many raincoats or umbrellas around, even in a downpour. True downpours are rare though and we more often get the steady rain that lasts for week or two at a time; sometimes it's a fine mist that really doesn't get you wet. I have a couple umbrellas but they reside in my car or in the garage and haven't been used in a couple years. So no, there isn't much rain gear used around here by the kids or the adults. The saying goes - You're not made of sugar so you won't melt. We're a tough breed up here (either that or we don't have much common sense -LOL).
Best Always,
Sherrie
