Alright I remember going out in Jr high, to be honest less about getting candy more about hanging out with friends but didn't seem odd back then. Did see some older kids out but usually just begging for candy and like no costumes or very lame ones. Have some friends with older kids that did dress up but not sure if it was for parties or whatever. So my 10 year old was never big on halloween. At 3 he was freaked out by people in masks, as he got older the phobias grew. We had to skip houses with scary decorations and forget it if we saw a dog or heard a dog he was done. This boggled DH mind because he remembers as a boy you filled a pillow case came home dumped it and went back out, but DS hits 5 houses and its are we done yet (heck no kid mom needs more candy)

Now he asked for a halloween costume and we got it and it was no easy task. Had a fight over it because being Jewish having something with a cross would be a no no and he just likes the wrestler and didn't get it. So compromised but DH didn't want to deal with order on line so went to Halloween store and they didn't have it and DS freaked out over the displays and all out panic attack in store. he decided no school party because he was worried about decorations fine but we still had a costume and last night comes "do I have to go" Kept him home with DH. Funny too because monkey see monkey do and usually when he starts mentioning go home his little brother anounces he is done too but with no one saying are we done yet he kept going and going.

We live accross town from most of his friends so no clue if any of them went out. My 12 year old neice has had no interest in the last few years either so not sure if its just them or the age???

My oldest went out until 7th grade, and would have went out in 8th grade with her BFF, but her BFF's mom said they were too old and wouldn't let her go out. I feel like as long as they are going to do a costume, and want to go out and trick or treat with friends, no harm no foul. My husband on the other hand thinks that once they reach middle school, that's it, there is no reason for them to be out doing that kind of stuff and its just inviting trouble. Its probably a case by case basis, but IMO, if they are going to go to the trouble and want to do it, why not let them have fun and still do it?

I can't exactly remember but I think my DD went all through high school or definitely into high school--not so much for candy but because she loves dressing up.  She is 24 and a nurse and asked me to mail her a red trench coat that she had at home because she was going to be Carmen Sandiego.  since she's a pediatric nurse I thought it might be for the kids in the hospital, but it was just for her to dress up.  When she was a senior in high school a group of friends got together and dressed up as the kids from the Doug Funnie show and won a prize for best group costume.  Now DS is a senior and was starting to think about a costume at 8:00 the night before, so I said don't even bother me with it--you should have thought before.  He shaved off his beard and went as his freshman self--ironic, and I'm sure no one got it.  lol  But he hasn't gone out in a while.
