Girls start wearing makeup in your area? Megan is headed into 6th grade and wants to start wearing eyeliner, mascara, and maybe blush to school. I've had complete strangers tell me how pretty she is when she's not wearing it and I really don't think she needs it at all. She's played around with it some and is actually very tasteful and skilled in application so I'm not worried about the clown effect. She's only 11 and has always been in a hurry to grow up. I'm trying to help her enjoy being a kid while she still can.

That being said, my mom had to nudge me strongly into makeup when I turned 14 right efore I started high school. Still not a big fan today. I only wear tinted moisturizer and blush on a daily basis. Once in a while I wear lip gloss and eye makeup but not very often so my view is a little skewed.

Thanks everyone!

I am not a big fan of kids wearing makeup either. Come up with an agreeable comprimize. Like lipstick and blush is OK, etc... My dd is 17 and hardly ever wears makeup, I don't wear a lot of it either.

Every girl is going to be different obviously. I have seen younger girls in elementary school wear it around here, but that's exception, not the norm. 6th grade is in the middle school here in most areas and it seems to be much more an everyday occurrance once they are with the older kids. Jordyn didn't start wearing makeup regularly til high school. She wore some in 8th grade, but not much at all, and she always does it very naturally, foundation, blush, eye shadow, mascara, and occassionally eye liner. She rarely wears lipstick or gloss and sticks with chapstick. I think you need to set your own rules in your house based on how you and DH feel about it, but also being reasonable to how she feels and does the peer issues with makeup. Also, teaching them to put it on to bring out their already natural beauty is key (IMO) to them not going overboard with it. You'll also want to discuss the importance of washing it off at night and everything.
