I live in Illinois too and I can just tell you what I've seen. Our school is a K-8 and I hardly ever saw 7th or 8th grade boys wearing coats!! It just amazes me. They all wear hooded sweatshirts. I'm sure there are a few, but not many. I don't know at the HS level. I'm guessing they only are outside when they arrive and leave school--no need for a heavy coat...whatever...

I see the boys and the girls in those Northface Fleece jackets. A waste of money but that's what they wear. :)

I don't like to wear winter coats either. Of course I don't stand outside a lot either. It's such a pain to wear it in the car and take it on and off

We live in the Chicago burbs and you are right, too cold for that stuff. I live by the high school and see kids come in just the hoodies all the time. I did notice some wore coats that are the snowboarding style from Spyder, they are nice and warm too. Hoodies will be OK if they wear several layers, the hoodie, the sweatshirt and then a shirt on most days.

I'm from the Chicago area as well (just moved to TX last year) and I remember not wanting to wear a coat when I was in Jr. High (oh so very long ago...). I had a tiny, very thin "winter" jacket that I would wear and it was a comprimise with my mom who wanted me to have down - LOL! I think the Northface jacket would be a good middle ground for you. I've found a couple of websites have great deals on items like that. They also have awesome service. The items they carry are usually discontinued, which is why they are so reasonable, but you can't tell that it's last year's color, or zipper location, you know?
