Hi ~ does anyone have a 6th grader in year round school? I'm looking for suggestions on what to do with DS11 during the "off track" time when I have to work.... I only have so much PTO and I don't want to impose on family too much. Help?!

I like the idea of year around school but your dilema is exactly why I believe that unless a city has every school on the same schedule it won't work. Here all of our summer camps are offered ... in the summer. If you had your vacation in October you are stuck. But if all school's closed the same time then you could have camps run in August, November, February and May or whenever works.

How old is he? Do you know if any of his friend's parents would be interested in babysitting (for a price) over the break? Some parents would like to bring in a little extra cash, SAHMs. Good luck finding something, its tough if they are too old to go to daycare but too young to stay home all day.

He's 11 so staying home all day isn't an option. I'm not happy about the year round school (long story) but there he is in a brand new school in a new city so I don't know any of the parents there (yet). The school district he was in was traditional and yes, much easier to plan for camps during the summer months!! I'm going to call the school for advice and check with the YMCA. Thanks for your reply!!

I think that you should call the school or district office and ask what programs are offered for kids during their off time.

It might be worth checking with museums, churches, park districts, and the library too. Check with the school too. They have certainly run into many in your situation and may have some resources for you.

I would check the park district, Y and church groups. I am sure your school district has some info for you. I would hate that schedule, summer is sacred to me!

I also like the idea of year round school w/vacations spread out thru out the yr. Its so much easier to go places when most everyone else is in school. The other benefit is the kids don't have time to get bored or forget anything. For people like you its not a good thing. If 1 school does it then the whole district needs to do it. dee

My SD was in year round school until she started High School this year. She came to stay with us over breaks and we really like the schedule, because it allowed us more time with her than if she had been on a traditional calender. She stayed with my parents if one of us wasn't able to be home.

Does your school system offer any kind of day camps during the breaks?
