Abortion and the end of the species

I've been watching Battlestar Galactica. I've just gotten to the end of the second series, so NO spoilers on later episodes please! Anyway, there was an interesting abortion hypothetical raised, and here it is:

The human population is down to less than 50,000. People are dying of all the usual things, but are also being killed in combat as humanity is at war with the Cylon race who are trying to wipe us out. If humanity is to survive, our numbers have to increase. Basically, people need to have babies. Lots of babies.

Under these circumstances, should abortion be banned? What about contraception? How do we balance a woman's right to physical autonomy with the survival of the species?

Discuss. I'll give my thoughts a bit later on.

In the grand scheme of the universe, I'm not sure if it really matters if there are or aren't humans.

It's not my job to gestate a pregnancy for an infertile couple...it's not my job to gestate a pregnancy in the hopes that child might grow up and cure cancer or some equally horrible disease....and it sure as hell isn't my job to pop out a whole litter for the good of the species. ;)

Oh, I'm quite sure that the universe doesn't care at all whether humans continue, lol!

No offense to your friends, but I think the voluntary extinction idea is bonkers. I agree with zero population growth though.

Excuse me?

Is your post supposed to be an example of Southern manners?

Here's what I think:

If the survival of the species is at stake, I think abortion would have to be made illegal except in very dire circumstances. Contraception would also be out with some exceptions (if the woman has had a baby in the last two years, if she has a condition that's contraindicated to pregnancy, etc).

I just think that the survival of mankind would take precedence over individual rights. In order to make this work, of course, there would have to be all kinds of benefits and support available for pregnant women and mothers. You can't make someone breed for the good of humanity and then allow them or their children to starve!

Ok, putting flame-retardant trousers on now :o)

Oh, I think voluntary extinction is crazy, but I go to a fairly rabidly environmental college, so I hear all sort of 'interesting' ideas!

LMAO! So true!

Theoretically yes, the hunter/gatherer way of life is the best. But we'd have to reduce the population of the world by about 90% to make it workable, plus lose just about all the technological advances we've made, and it's amazing how few people are really willing to give up toilet paper ;oD
