Abortion instead of contraception

This article is about abortion statistics in the UK.

Parts of it are scary.

In particular

The statistics, for 2006, showed nearly 15,000 women were having their third or more abortion, while 54 of those had terminated eight or more pregnancies.

But Mr Pritchard, the MP for The Wrekin in Shropshire, said abortion was being seen as an alternative to contraception "in far too many cases".

"And it’s also, (Oh! What’s that term, Holly?), one of those arguments that is intrinsically hollow. A bit like, person A says: I am against gun control and person B responds: So you must be okay with children playing with loaded guns."

The term you're looking for is a "straw man" logical fallacy.

~She was 14 in 1969~

I'm wondering if single women there, particularly teenagers, could even obtain reliable birth control then.

They really did not have a lot of options. The pill only became available to married women and single women over 21 after 1960, although the Comstock Laws banning information about it weren't lifted until 1965. On top of that, it would have been very hard for a single woman to find a doctor who would have prescribed it to her, much like it is very difficult to find a doctor who will perform late-term abortions, even if it is legal in that state. Condoms were legal at that time, but a young woman on the streets would probably have had a hard time convincing a sexual partner to use one. Back then, about the worst you could get from having unprotected sex was Syphilis or Hepatitis, which are both terrible but don't necessarily kill you like HIV/AIDS.

Interesting that you should bring that up, the extreme points of view, as I was reading the thread and realizing, not for the first time, that some people really can't move past viewing women in general through the Madonna/Whore filter.

I THINK I AM SO DISGUSTED WITH MY GENDER

is that wrong? women are dying to have children of their own and women gladly decide to take it...over and over and over and brag that they will do whatever is neccessary to stay childless...that hurts...and what is even more hurtful are the women who think it is ok to have abortions because they think childbirth is more dangerous and unhealthy...i think women are jus uneducated and need to be far sooner than they teach in school....yea childbirth is hard and can be devestating for some but it was worth it....i dont know what i would do without my son...he is the love of my life
