I have 2 whole child free hours now so I thought it might be a good time for me to finally fully explain where I stand on abortion.
I have said before that I think making abortion illegal is pointless so I thought I should actually take some time to explain why. If I thought it would actually work to prevent abortion I would get behind it in a heart beat the problem is there is no data to back up the ascertaions (sp?) that it would do so. Right now countries where it remains illegal have no lower rates than we do in Canada and the US. Like pot making it illegal will not make it go away.
The second reason is that I am worried it could result in a lot of red tape for women who need Emergency abortions.
I have also been spending a lot of time (far too much probably) trying to think of how to explain how I feel about the fetus/mother relationship. I believe that as a human a fetus deserves the same moral consideration as any other person. The problem is it is quite a different situation then most other human relationships.
In fact the ONLY scenario I can think of that I feel accurately mirrors the dependent relationship is that of simese twins where one twin is responsible for most organ function. So forgive me but I am going to run with that comparison.
If twin A is doing most of the organ work and twin B could not survive without them it leaves us in a difficult ethical position as to whetehr or not to separate them. There is little doubt that twin A would live a more normal life if they were separated but we can not fully disregard twin B in the equation. Now if the strain of providing for Twin Bs organ function would kill twin A and therefore twin B would die as well as they can not live without twin A I would see no issue in separating them and trying to save at least one of them. However if they could both survive but twin B would cause financial (difficulty finding work) and emotional (difficulty with relationships) hardship for twin A I would not be willing to have them separated.
It is the same for the mother fetus relationship where mom is twin A and fetus twin B. As I feel the unborn are human and deserve equal consideration I would apply the same standards to the morality of abortion as I would to the separation of the twins.
Clear as mud?
