A NINE-year-old girl pregnant after years of alleged sexual abuse by her stepfather is likely to abort twins she is carrying in a case that has shocked Brazil, reports in Sao Paulo said.
The Brazilian girl, who was not identified because she is a minor, was found to be four months pregnant after being taken to hospital suffering stomach pains, the news websites G1, pe360graus and the Diario de Pernambuco reported.

She was being cared for by a medical and psychological team in the Maternal-Child Institude in the northern city of Recife, close to her hometown of Alagoinha in Pernambuco state, they said.

"We don't know if she will develop the pregnancy up to the end because of the structure of her body. It is a big risk for her,'' the doctor who confirmed her pregnancy before she was taken to the institute, Jose Severiano Cavalcanti, told the Diario de Pernambuco.

"She doesn't have a pelvis able to support a gestation of twins,'' he said.

Abortion is illegal in Brazil except in cases of rape or if the woman's health is in danger.

The institute in Recife was unable to immediately confirm information about the case.

According to police accounts reported in the media, the 23-year-old stepfather was believed to have abused the girl since she was aged six, paying her one Brazilian real (about 77 Australian cents) for each sexual relation.

He also allegedly abused the girl's physically handicapped 14-year-old sister.

He was arrested on Thursday as he attempted to flee to another region in Brazil, and was being kept in protective custody.

This story is just so awful on so many levels! I hope that this poor girl can have some kind of normal life after all is said and done.

That story is absolutely disgusting, as PP said, on so many levels.

I can't believe there are people who think it would be better for a NINE year old to carry twins to term, risking death and disability.

She definitely qualifies for a termination even in a country with very strict views. Poor, poor wee mite. My heart is breaking for her!

Yikes! If I'd ever found a case where I would strongly advocate abortion, that would definitely be it.

At the behest of religious MEN, who will never carry a pregnancy to term nor assume the inherent risks of pregnancy/abortion-how EASY for the MEN, eh?

<>

Shall we say rapist? or XY-challenged individual, not a MAN in any sense of the word...

Flee? But of course, he is a COWARD, why else would he attempt to flee?

Protective custody? Just another word for rapist-coddling...

I would LOVE to know, based on this story-who is the stronger, men or women?

I have a 9 year old daughter and I truly believe carrying even one baby to term would be detrimental to her health and wellbeing, let alone two babies.

Bishop punishes mom for daughter's abortion
Brazilian to excommunicate her and doctors for allowing it

RIO DE JANEIRO - A Roman Catholic archbishop says the abortion of twins carried by a 9-year-old girl who allegedly was raped by her stepfather means excommunication for the girl's mother and her doctors.

Despite the nature of the case, the church had to hold its line against abortion, Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho said in an interview aired Thursday by Globo television.

"The law of God is higher than any human laws," he said. "When a human law — that is, a law enacted by human legislators — is against the law of God, that law has no value. The adults who approved, who carried out this abortion have incurred excommunication."

Health Minister Jose Gomes Temporao rebuked the archbishop, saying, "I'm shocked by two facts: by what happened to the girl and by the position of the archbishop, who in saying he defends life puts another at risk."

Abortion is generally illegal in Brazil, which is home to more Catholics than any other nation. But the procedure is allowed when the mother's life is in danger, when the fetus has no chance of survival or in rape cases where the woman has not passed her 20th week of pregnancy.

Doctors said the girl was 15 weeks pregnant when the abortion was performed Wednesday in the northeastern city of Recife, where Sobrinho is archbishop. Health officials said the life of the girl — who weighs 80 pounds — was in danger.

The pregnancy was discovered last week when the girl fell ill and her mother took her to a clinic. The child then told officials she had been abused by her stepfather, who is in police custody.

A similar case in southern Brazil surfaced Thursday. Authorities in Rio Grande do Sul state told the O Globo newspaper that an 11-year-old girl allegedly raped by her stepfather is seven months pregnant.

The 51-year-old stepfather has been in jail since January while the girl is in a hospital for high risk pregnancies and apparently will not have an abortion.

This makes me feel physically ill, and is the most wonderful reminder of why I'm not Catholic anymore. Pro-life? Yeah, right. They obviously have no regard for the health and well-being of that precious, traumatized little girl. More like pro-birth, then screw 'em. I can't believe that people claiming to speak for God can see no problem in using a tiny rape victim as an incubator against her will, and I can't believe they'd use faith as a weapon against treating this little girl appropriately.
