I think exclusively teaching abstinence is futile, yes- harmful, in fact, because it fails to provide information on safe practices should teens decide to have sex anyway.

Even kids who take those "virginity pledges" are having sex, just in a different way than most other kids have sex. They are doing sexual things together including oral sex, but this is risky and they aren't being informed of the risks involved such as

And these days, many people are not getting married for the first time until their late 20s or 30s. Only a freak could stay abstinent that long!


At one point when I was in my late 20's, and my brothers were early 30's and late 30's respectively, my mom and I somehow ended up in a conversation about sex.
