April's Mom Blogger Admits Anti-Abortion Baby Blog Was Elaborate Hoax

MOKENA, Ill. (AP) -- The story was compelling: An unmarried Illinois mother chose to carry her terminally ill child to term rather than have an abortion because of her deep Christian faith.

It was all a hoax.

For two months, the suburban Chicago woman wrote about her pregnancy, her fears and her hopes on a blog that drew nearly a million hits to her Web site. Followers promised to pray for her and her baby, April Rose. They sent letters and gifts to a post office box she listed online.

But when "April's Mom" wrote on Sunday that her baby had died hours after being delivered at home - and posted photos - supporters soon realized they'd been duped.

One of the followers recognized the "baby" swaddled in white blankets as a lifelike doll that she had in her own home.

"As soon as I saw that picture, I knew it was a scam," said Elizabeth Russell, a doll maker from Buffalo.

There never was a pregnancy, only a 26-year-old social worker named Beccah Beushausen from suburban Mokena who said she always liked to write. Angry followers on dozens of Christian parenting Web sites helped expose Beushausen's identity.

Beushausen's Web site had been removed by Friday, and an address listed for a Rebeccah Beushausen in Mokena didn't include a phone number.

Sad. Just sad. And a cruel mockery of all those who've been in that situation and faced the choice. Makes me quite angry even after the fact!

There was a woman named "Sarah" who posted on several EC's here (different PGs). She claimed to have a gravely ill baby that she supposedly delievered at 24 weeks, when the baby died everyone rallied around her, when her EC tried to call the Hospital she supposedly gave birth at they found that no one by her name or her daughter's name had ever existed. The really messed up thing is that she supposedly had a full term stillborn "Matthew"

Yes, it makes it seem that those moms who have legitimately lost babies are somehow lying now.

My mom lost three babies nearly 50 years ago due to the incompatibility of my parents' blood types. This was before there was the Rhogam shot.

Two died shortly after birth (babies 3 & 4)and one died at seven months in utero (baby 5). After

My DH had a blood-type incompatibility with his mother. The treatment for it in the 1970s was horrendous. They had to drain all his blood, replace it with his mother's blood type, then slowly change it back to his bloody type. Thank heavens he and I have the same blood type.

She was shocked to learn that it's just a simple test and shot in most cases, nowadays. Shocked but relieved.

Oh I remember her. She was CL of an EC when she had her last "pregnancy" and she really took them for a ride.

There were "twins" weren't there? One was SB and the other died shortly after birth, right?

And multiple other losses as well. Oh yes, I remember that! And how when people felt the need to discuss what happened entire threads disappeared.

We had a woman on our PG just do this sort of thing. She was with us the whole time we were an EC and she supposedly had a healthy baby to join the 2 DDs she already have. I do think those 3 kids are real, but who can be sure? She claimed to immediately become pregnant with twins and then started saying she was suffering from seizures and the doctors couldn't figure out what was causing them. When the doctors told her she had to have an abortion to save herself, she said she'd rather die than abort her babies. And then her "husband" posted to say that she'd fallen in a coma and wasn't going to recover.

One woman on our board was so distraught, she offered to fly out to help the husband take care of the children. Anyway, after some digging around and contacting some of this woman's MySpace friends, it turns out the whole twin pregnancy was fake. I have no idea what would possess a woman to post with a board for over a year and then come up with that ridiculous story! Nuts!

That is very sad.

I still find it touching that other people are so willing to reach out to someone they don't know, but its just too bad that in this case they were tricked.
