Huckabee endorses "Egg a Person" Amendment

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/25/huckabee-endorses-egg-as_n_88444.html

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Monday endorsed a proposed Colorado Human Life Amendment that would define personhood as a fertilized egg.

The former Arkansas governor and Baptist minister also supports a human-life amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Huckabee spoke favorably about the Colorado ballot initiative, sponsored by 20-year-old Kristi Burton and her Colorado for Equal Rights group, during his Friday visit to Colorado Springs.

On Monday, Huckabee lent official support to the measure.

"This proposed constitutional amendment will define a person as a human being from the moment life begins at conception," Huckabee said in a statement. ...

Burton's initiative, if approved by voters in November, would extend state constitutional protections to every fertilized egg, guaranteeing the right to life, liberty, equality of justice and due process of law.

Approval would lay the foundation for making abortion illegal in the state.

>>Alive - YES - pregnant - NO! As I have posted in the past - until the egg is implanted there is no pregnancy - and there fore I am not against preventing the egg from doing so via birth control.

Now, does that mean that I believe that eggs should be fertilized in order to be destroyed? NO! Do I believe that they are alive - yes. However in normal course of a month - most ovulated eggs to become fertilized - but MOST are passed with a period.

And yes, THEY ARE HUMAN. <<

I agree with all of this, and curious to see where the thread goes from here.

Simple. Being pro-choice does not mean you do not like or advocate for children. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Being pro choice is about just that--choice. I CHOSE to conceive and have children. Therefore I am pro choice AND pro child.

but if you're pro child and you get pregnant, than you would never even think of abortion, because you would want that child to live

yes that is what it means because a child is a child no matter how small, the two are completely different

My husband and I decided we only want two children. We have two wonderful children that we love with our whole hearts. I love all of my nieces and nephews. I love all of my friends children. I would do anything I could for them.

If I were to get pregnant right now, abortion would be a consideration. While not definite as I have no intention of getting pregnant I will not know that feeling of an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy therefore cannot 'guess' how I would react (as a parent I have learned to never say "I will NEVER do such and such"). In order to hopefully never have to made this decision my dh took medically permanent actions to prevent pregnancy.

I am not pro abortion. I believe that abortion should be safe, legal, and rare (forgot who said that originally). I believe if we want to decrease abortions we need to look at why they are needed. We need to look at reducing the demand for abortion instead of attacking the supply.

It's always interesting hearing people's thoughts.

You know that Dr. Seuss was really irritated that the PL movement co-opted the phrase from his book, right?

Besides that, let's look at your comment. Shall we make aborting an ectopic pregnancy illegal because it's not the embryo's fault it decided to implant in the fallopian tube? So what if the woman dies. "A child is a child no matter how small," right?

Two entities cannot reign supreme over one body. Kind of like "one man cannot serve two masters." One must be submissive to the other. If it's not the woman, then you're giving an entity without reason (and until a certain point, without a brain) control over her body. Can I have control over your body? I have both reason and a fully-developed adult brain. Want to sign over power of attorney to me? Now, how about my 32-week-old fetus? Do you want to sign over power of attorney to it?
