Huckabee endorses "Egg a Person" Amendment

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/25/huckabee-endorses-egg-as_n_88444.html

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Monday endorsed a proposed Colorado Human Life Amendment that would define personhood as a fertilized egg.

The former Arkansas governor and Baptist minister also supports a human-life amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Huckabee spoke favorably about the Colorado ballot initiative, sponsored by 20-year-old Kristi Burton and her Colorado for Equal Rights group, during his Friday visit to Colorado Springs.

On Monday, Huckabee lent official support to the measure.

"This proposed constitutional amendment will define a person as a human being from the moment life begins at conception," Huckabee said in a statement. ...

Burton's initiative, if approved by voters in November, would extend state constitutional protections to every fertilized egg, guaranteeing the right to life, liberty, equality of justice and due process of law.

Approval would lay the foundation for making abortion illegal in the state.

To be brief: I consider "children" to be newborns, infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers, etc.; - not zygotes, embryos and fetuses.

Why on earth should ANY birth control be at stake? How about people minding their own bodies and keeping all of their noses out of mine?

"but if you're pro child and you get pregnant, than you would never even think of abortion, because you would want that child to live"

We had a discussion a while back, and you may be interested to know that many prochoicers would not consider abortion as an option except in the case of medical emergency. Many just feel this issue is something that should be made by the woman who is pregnant and not by the government.

First, thank you for welcoming me to the board. I think that contraception should be taken out of the picture because of my religious beliefs. As most would guess, I'm Catholic. We believe that children are a gift from God and that contraception gets in the way of His plans. But we do believe use Natural Family planning. It's safer, no side effects, and it really does work. I've used it.

I'm really interested to hear everyone elses opinions. Thanks!! :)

You do realize that NFP is a form of contraception, right? Contraception prevents conception, which is exactly what NFP aims to do.

well, my opinion is that the Pope can dictate to his followers, but he can't dictate to me or others who have no interest in his opinion. I don't live in a theocracy and have no interest in Papish rule over my life, including my reproductive decisions.

In other words, you get to choose to not use BC, but you don't get to impose that decision on any other woman.

I was raised in the Roman Catholic Church, but have embraced my pagan path instead now.
The Roman Catholic Church would not, after we had conceived 6 times, (2 of which I miscarried) the other 4 of which were born via cesaerean section, at which time I was told in NO UNCERTAIN terms that I should have a tubal ligation, as one more pregnancy might kill me. The husband and I were uber-fertile, our last one conceived nearly miraculously, due to the extensive scarring and formation of adhesions caused by the previous 3 c sections. When consulting the priest, and later a bishop, about needing a tubal ligation, I was assured that my health and life were not nearly as important as our willingness to accept more children in our marriage, and to not separate the procreative aspect of sex from the unitive.
I really have no respect for a Church that places such little respect for MY life, when it accords more respect to ova that have not even BEEN fertilized yet.

I can respect your right to follow those beliefs , but wonder why you cannot be happy with choosing to use NFP and decline using other sorts of contraception in your own life, while leaving the rest of the women in this country the respect for their own choices should they choose other forms of birth control? Seems so very disrespectful, controlling and imposing your religious beliefs on those who do not share them.
IN fact, your beliefs, if put into law, VIOLATE MY religious beliefs. SO why should yours aplly to ANYONE outside of yourself?

It's not that the RCC does not respect your life, it's merely that we respect ALL life. You come across as very upset. I was merely asked my OPINION. We all have opinions. And I know without a doubt that the beliefs of the Church well never become law. So I really don't think you have anything to worry about. As for NFP, it is working with God and your body so that you don't have to put anything foreigh in your body. You think that BC is good and you don't want anyone telling you otherwise... and I respect you for that. Like I said, we all have opinions. I am merely commenting on this board because this whole thing with Huckabee is very interesting to me. Usually we don't see politicians with enough balls to say something like that. It just so happens that what he said goes along with what I believe... that's all.
