I think this was missed hidden in another thread - so I though I would post it here.

>Abortions are legal in the surrounding countries aren't they? If so, are you saying that it's only legal for citizens of these countries to have abortions there? <

As was said by another poster, many of those women who leave Ireland to obtain abortions claim to have British addresses, etc. So, it is very difficult to track whether or not these women obtained abortions legally in another country. It is illegal to leave Ireland to obtain an abortion in another country.

>Again, had AGI wanted to find out what really goes on in Ireland, they should have made the attempt to find the women that seek abortions elsewhere. If they had, they could have included the margin of error in the report.<

Since the report was a global comparison, they relied on reported data rather than going into each and every country and extensively surveying the public. Had this report been on Ireland specifically rather than the world in general

I agree there is always more that can be done. I rarely find a study that I feel has bothered to beat a dead horse and get enough info to fully satisfy me. Of course my husband could be right and I am just hard to please but if I even do find something I find to be accurate beyond a shadow of a doubt I promise to post it ;)

Just a thought on teenage abortions - it's not cheap. Here are some low-end prices:

Return flight from Cork to London:.................£250
Privately paid abortion:...........................£450
Hotel room in London for 1 night:...................£95
Incidentals (travel to and from airport, meals etc).£30

Total..............................................£825

Or $1640.

How many teenagers do you know that can put their hands on $1640 without their parents' knowledge?

Just to throw this in - IMO your collective furies should be directed at the Catholic church as much as (if not more than) the Irish government. I guarantee that if the Pope declared abortion ok, or even ok under certain circumstance, Irish law would change.

Why do you assume that such women would respond to those surveys? I think the opposite is likely to be true.

I think you are underestimating the huge societal taboo against abortion in Ireland. IMO very few women would respond to the suggested approaches.

It is legal under British law - iow she would not be committing a crime in the UK, but she would be culpable under Irish law. Therefore it would be VERY unlikely that she would be willing to discuss the true reason for her trip upon her return.

Oh the Pope and the Catholic Church have full measure of my disdain and fury over this and other reproductive stances. However, I hold Ireland fully responsible for their stance as well.
