Regarding fetal pain

I was doing some looking for fetal pain research and came across this article from almost three years ago:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/900848.stm

A British doctor suggested that fetuses may be able to feel pain as early as 17 wks, so fetuses should be anesthetized before abortions that take place after 17 wks so as to give them "the benefit of the doubt".

I'm sure you can imagine what I think of it. What do you think?

The consensus at this point in time is 26 weeks with studies still being done. However, none of the legitimate studies go earlier than the UK one and that one is murky. I have

no problem with anesthesia to a fetus.

But there are people out there trying to claim that an embryo at 8 or 9 weeks can feel pain and that is simply nonsense.
