What is your opinion of DIY Abortions?

I just read an article that suggested that DIY (do it yourself) abortions may be more common than we think. I have to say, this doesn't surprise me. I'm sure that many women either avoid going to a clinic for fear of being stigmatized or can't go to a clinic due to their age, financial situation, etc. It's very concerning, though since DIY abortions carry such a risk to the mother! Have you ever known anyone who's done a DIY abortion? What is your opinion of these types of abortions?

I don't have any substantiating links, but the chatter in the Emergency Medicine world is that this is coming from Latin America - the interface with pharmacies is different there, people are permitted to buy medications over the counter which would require a prescription here, and so it is more common to guess at doses and self medicate. There is a pill (mifepristone) which causes miscarriage by blocking the hormone progesterone. It is actually is quite safe IF it is taken at the earliest phases of pregnancy. Taken later than 9 or 10 weeks there can be dangerous amounts of bleeding. And no matter when, it is unsafe to take without followup because if it doesn't work, the woman needs to know (doesn't seem to cause harm when it fails). Anyhow, this is being mailed up from Latin America and sold at the neighborhood shops, alongside folk remedies and herbals, in uncertain dosages and potentially "cut" or diluted or who knows what.

In some neighborhoods, women are displaying a high degree of insight - they get the DIY going at home, then once they are cramping and bleeding and likely into the inevitable phase, they present to the ED for monitoring and if need be resuscitation.

It's depressing, it's clearly less safe than being under the care of a provider form the start, but it's not likely to be as unsafe as the older generation of illegal instrumented abortions, which had a high risk of infection, perforation, hemorrhage at all phases, etc.

Its sad and scary. Politicians need to keep this between women and their doctors.

I lost a cousin who went to someone back in the late '60s for a illegal abortion. So I'm not crazy about this DYI abortion.

Sadly, with the current crop of anti-choice fanatics trying to obtain political power, we will probably see more of them.

I knew of someone (friend of a friend) who did one using the "coat-hanger" method. It makes me sick to even type that out.
