All Lactivism is evil and unethical

"All of this has taught me yet another reason why pushing for higher breastfeeding rates... is so often horribly, terribly misguided.  Behind those rates are real people, some of whom are going through real torment; it’s cold and immoral to sacrifice people who are already in a state of pain and turmoil for the sake of a statistic.  The militant variety of breastfeeding advocacy is of course the wrong way to go; it’s unethical not just to those who can’t, shouldn’t, or don’t want to breastfeed, but to those who can and do.  But even the middle-of-the-road, common, everyday breastfeeding advocacy—advocacy that already comes across to a lot of bottle-feeding parents as simplistic, unrealistic, patronizing, paternalistic, and even cruel and dehumanizing—seems outrageously inappropriate when your pregnancy ventures into the hairy world of high-risk.  Even soft-toned, pitying articles stating that not breastfeeding is not a new mom’s fault, it’s the fault of society, our culture, the health care system, family members, doctors, nurses, midwives, bosses—these essays may employ a soft glove ....they’re still sometimes a slap in the face."
