Is breastfeeding toxic?

Just thought I'd bring a topic up for debate. I agree that in an ideal world, breastfeeding is best over formula, but when I think about it I start to wonder. Think of all the foods we eat that have hormones, steroids, pesticides. We're passing all of that on to our baby so in that case wouldn't formula feeding actually be safer? Just a question.

There has been some consideration of this.

One thing is, that there are so many important ingredients in breastmilk (hundreds) including things to boost immunity, and living cells that are absent from formula, that even though toxins have been detected in breastmilk, babies are still better off being breastfed.

The other thing to consider is that the cows from which milk is used to make formula are part of the world today, and also ingest hormones and pesticides. So formula is also contaminated with those same things. As well, formula manufacturing and distribution can leave the formula contaminated with many other things. Even if you use BPA free bottles, formula containers are lined with this hormone disruptor. Powdered formula is not sterile, and often enough is contaminated with harmful and even life-threatening bacteria. There is nothing that even the most careful parent can do to prevent this. Last year, there were even babies sick from pieces of insects in the formula!

The studies show breastfeeding coming out ahead,

Both of you have very valid points. Like I said, my husband and I were discussing this and he brought up that point and I thought of this board and what a great "debate" it would make. I just asked the question without doing any research on it beforehand. It's interesting to hear everyone's view points. I think this is a great board to come to with an open mind. I think too many people come to boards like this with their minds set and just want to argue, while I come to the board with an open mind and am eager to hear the viewpoints from both sides. Thanks again for the info :)

It's a good question. But then I consider that if I'm exposed to these things in the environment, so are the cows whose milk by-products are being used to create the formula for sale all over the world, and I think that as long as I and the cows are both being exposed to bad stuff that can get into our milk, I'd still rather feed my babies milk that comes directly from their own mother's body, which their bodies were designed to receive.

I think it's a real testament to the quality of breastmilk that, despite the presence of contaminants in breastmilk, studies continue to show that ff babies have worse outcomes. Just think how much better off or babies would be if we cleaned up our environment and decontaminated our breastmilk.
