During the week, an aquaintance of mine with a five week old baby was posting on Facebook about how miserable and uncomfortable her baby seemed, especially during the day.

I'll have to check out block feeding sounds useful.

Block-feeding saved my breastfeeding life, LOL. I started when my first baby was about two months old, when I couldn't figure out how to help him feed better or get my supply under control and breastfeeding was feeling like punishment to me. I never looked back. Within the week, things had improved exponentially. My second child was only ever block-fed (I was nursing both of them until she was fourteen months old), and I'm so thankful I was already knowledgable and experienced with it because she was a bad refluxer and a fussy, needy baby naturally, so I'm sure things would have been much worse without it. :)

Yes, this friend is already eliminating some culprit foods as well, but sounds like the block-feeding has worked well.

Wow...I have heard of Caro syrup (just a tiny amount to help) and my pedi gave me that advice, but brown sugar?

Well, in this case, the mother was exclusively breastfeeding, so the baby was not constipated - a problem that affects formula fed babies more often than I realised. What she needed was advice on managing the oversupply that had been contributing to her baby's problems.
