Commitment, or lack thereof...

So I just saw something somewhere else (won't specify where, but I bet a few of you will figure it out!) where a woman indicated that she WAS planning on breastfeeding, but now because of a heated debate about it, she doesn't want to anymore.

Ummmmm, are you kidding me?

"Nisu I am saying that you can NOT compare alcohol to formula"

Again - no one compared alcohol to formula.

Where was the lactation consultant through all of this? Can I presume your hospital didn't have one or that person was too busy to see you?

What happened was...there was no lactation consultant. They did have a "nurse educator" but the weight loss panic happened on a Saturday & she worked Mon-Fri. I insisted I leave on Sunday (3 days pp) as the care I received was extremely poor all aorund & I felt like I was going to go crazy if I didn't get home, I had been in a city away from where I live for 5 weeks to deliver since I lilve in a small town where babies aren't delivered & they make you leave town at 37 weeks.

In retrospect, what should have happened was that you continued to nurse at the breast and supplemented after each feeding with formula NOT given through a bottle (through alternative means such as finger feeding, dropper or syringe). Bottles should NOT be introduced until after the 3 week mark - ever hear of nipple confusion? Obviously, they didn't. The pump is never as good as the baby at stimulating your milk supply so by removing direct nursing from the picture, it's likely for your supply to decrease. There was no reason to tell you to pump exclusively at this point.

To be fair to the horrible nurses, they did not introduce a bottle. The made me feed him using a med cup that he choked on & gave him a rash on his chin. I don't know how 2 day old babies are expected to be able to swallow out of med cups. I agree that they should have been encouraging me to continue nursing at the breast.

Just curious what type of pump you were using. For a non-latching baby, the hospital should have suggested a hospital rental like the Medela Lactina. The minimum decent pump for EPing would be a double electric like the Pump in Style, Purely Yours or Lansinoh. Any chance you were using a lower-quality pump? That stinks about the plugged ducts - ow!! I'm assuming since you weren't getting any LC help that no one suggested lecithin. It's a natural supplement that helps prevent plugged ducts.

I was using a really good pump actually, a Medela Symphony that the public Health nurse loaned me. It was a hospital grade, double pump. I did actually find out about the Lecithin by researching on my own on the net & was taking it.

So did you just switch to formula very recently? If that's the case, it's not too late AT ALL to relactate. I really really wish you had reached out for help while you were having the issues rather than after you had already switched to formula. The issues you ran into are absolutely fixable with the right information and assistance, neither of which you received.

I started with some formula on Monday & stopped pumping totally on Tuesday. I am just feeling semi-normal in the breast area today after the "rocks in boobs ultimate pain thing" that I had going on for 3 days.

Dana: Thank you for your comments. I think maybe if I had had different support, I may have succeeded. If I have another baby, I would like to try again & be a hell of a lot more assertive with getting help.

Nyssa STTN first around 17 mos but it was inconsistent to begin with and again, she was more like 4 before she stopped waking pretty much completely except for occasional illness.>>

Again, it's a relative term ;)
