Commitment, or lack thereof...

So I just saw something somewhere else (won't specify where, but I bet a few of you will figure it out!) where a woman indicated that she WAS planning on breastfeeding, but now because of a heated debate about it, she doesn't want to anymore.

Ummmmm, are you kidding me?

I believe what PPer was referring to was having to pump, as well as do the feedings and having no sleep.

Comparing a person who drinks alcohol to a person who drinks formula is pretty much comparing alcohol to formula.

The same as feeding it BM."

"Very true. However, one of the PPers had asked for an example of a BFed baby who got sick from that choice. Since I had a personal experience, I thought I'd share."

But you didn't get sick from the choice to bfeed. It's more like "even breastfeeding (by itself without special enzymes) wasn't enough" than "you'd have been better off if she'd formula fed from the start". Unless there was a case of extreme coincidence and the pre-digested formula was what was available.>>

Sorry, I'm trying to catch up on all the posts!

Think of it this way.

Actually, when done very carefully, newborn babies can be quite good at cup feeding. You have to tilt it not so it flows into the mouth, but more so it is just barely touching the lips, so the baby can "lap it up like a cat" so to speak.

This is a common feeding method for cleft-affected babies (ie babies with cleft lips and or palates who can't suck from a bottle OR breast before surgery). Other methods include squeeze bottles.

I was reading about this the other day, and apparently, there is no way to measure the amount.

It definitely is. I never EPed (in fact my kids never took milk very much other than at the breast...a few sips here or there in a sippy cup but that was about it...) but I DID pump in order to donate milk. I donated milk to a close friend for her son (she had a breast reduction and couldn't produce enough) for an entire year, and for 6 months for her other son. I have the UTMOST respect for the hard work that goes into EPing. However, seeing a good IBCLC *can* help often in resolving nipple confusion (not saying it always works or that it's always easy, obviously...) and getting a baby back to the breast would mean much less extra work load! :-)
