Commitment, or lack thereof...

So I just saw something somewhere else (won't specify where, but I bet a few of you will figure it out!) where a woman indicated that she WAS planning on breastfeeding, but now because of a heated debate about it, she doesn't want to anymore.

Ummmmm, are you kidding me?

Individuals telling me that they 'feel sorry for me'.

Read further back to the message that I responded to.

That was personal not factual. <<

Actually I think it was feeling sorry for your child. I can see where that can be offensive, but really when you take it into context of bfing being something that she believes strongly in, it is really not offensive. I feel sorry for kids whose parents spank because that is something that I believe strongly against. Someone may feel sorry for my kids because I put them in time out if that is something they feel strongly against...you know...you just have to take it into context.

"Formula has never caused fetal alcohol syndrome or alcohol poisoning."

And alcohol has never caused asthma.

No, formula has never caused FAS. It HAS caused numerous cases of anaphylactic allergic reaction AND is very VERY strongly linked to NEC in preemies (VERY few BFed infant preemies get NEC...I think something like 15 *times* the number of formula-fed preemies get NEC) and also is often contaminated with E. sakazakii and aluminum, both of which can be damageing to a baby.

Cigarette smoking also doesn't cause FAS. It causes OTHER problems in babies of smoking moms. None of these examples is "exactly" like formula b/c only formula is linked with all the same things formula is linked with. ;-)

Taking thalidomide also doesn't cause FAS. It has, however, been said that alcohol does to the brain what thalidomide did to the limbs: it can strike anytime, any place, and it isn't always "logical" ie some moms took lower doses and had children with all 4 limbs completely missing and other moms took higher doses and had children with say "only" a finger or 2 missing. Both are teratogens and are harmful at high levels to developping babies and at least for alcohol, there is no known safe limit.

The basic comparaison here is not what the effects are of alcohol or anything else on a developping fetus and formula effects on an infant. The comparaison is that there is a certain level of *risk*: risk of FAS, risk of missing limbs, risk of being smaller and premature in the case of smoking mom's baby, and for formula, risk to health in several ways including excess aluminum, NEC, E. sakazakii infection, anaphylactic reaction and those aren't all, those are just some of the more *serious* afflictions that are more RISKY in FFed infants. There is a RISK to a baby of FAS/FAE/ARND if you drink while pg. That risk is EVEn there if you have just a drink or 2 in later pregnancy, though it is MUCH diminished compard to a heavy drinker. You can completely avoid that risk by never drinking while pg and while TTC. There is a RISK to a baby from formula. Several risks actually. None are guaranteed to happen (luckily). Lots of babies "fare ok". But again, you can't know ahead of time if "your" baby will be the one who DOESN'T fare well on formula. There ARE parents out there who have kids who had anaphylactic reactions to formula like jigbean's child, whose children were not so lucky...parents who no longer have a child.

>>So you do think sttn at 17 mo is early? What does that make your dd sttn at 8 weeks? Super-fantasmo-early?<<

Hey Gianna slept through the night (8 pm - 5 am) at 6 weeks and 2 days (we don't CIO and we demand feed her...she is super lazy!), I want a term for that one!!! Aria (our 2 year 9 month old) also demand fed and never CIO just started sttn a few weeks ago so I think she should be super-fantasmo-late!!! For Gianna I am thinking something along the lines of Super-duper-fantasmo-early....;)

OK...color me confused. I ff....I don't feel bad for your child because you ffed. However, I could understand how someone would feel bad for mine and I really could care less because I will probably feel sorry for their kid because of some other parenting issue....

How exactly did I offend?

not all women feel that formula is risky to an infant...including ME

Just because you don't "feel" it doesn't mean it isn't so...
