Debate: How long after it expired is formula safe?

According to a spokeswoman for manufacturers Pfizer:
>> it is a ‘best before’ date on their baby food tins rather than a ‘sell by’ date, adding: “Unless the tin had been damaged and air was allowed to get in, it is unlikely it would have caused any harm, even though it was so long out of date. “It is relatively stable for a long period of time.” <<
She was talking about a can of formula that expired July 28/09 and fed to a two month old baby this month, who became violently ill after using the formula for 5 days.
Would you feel comfortable feeding your baby formula past it's Best Before date?
