Describe Yourself & Your Parenting Style

There are lots of other debatable topics besides BFing - so even if you aren't interested in debating your parenting style and beliefs, I thought maybe we could say where we stand on each topic. I put it in the Debate folder so if someone wants to run with a topic, they can.

Post why if you want no, or not... add anything I may have missed. I know that it's not as black & white as this, so if you want to explain, please do so. Answer as many ... or as few as you feel comfortable with.

vaccinating/altered schedule/non-vaccinating

Vaccinated, but DS2 had some bad reactions, and I suspect it brought on his asthma. There were not as many vaccinations back then as there are now.

disposable diapers/cloth diapers/elimination training

Cloth. A mixture of flat ones I folded, and some shaped ones I sewed myself. Occacionally used disposable, but DS2 was allergic to them.

attachment parenting/mainstream parenting

Was more like attachment, and even more so as I had more children.

parented to sleep/sleep training/cry it out

Parented to sleep. Did some training with DS1 when he was sleeping lots in the day (with MIL) and waking 8 to 10 times a night with me, but did it without crying.

baby carriers, slings, wraps/strollers

Stroller, but got a carrier with DS2 - easier to travel with and he hated the stroller.

rear-facing car seats till you have to turn/forward-facing as soon as possible

Didn't really have that when mine were little. By the time I had DS2, he was in something called a capsule, supposedly for up to six months. But he was such a big baby, he was too big and long to fit in it comfortably after three and a half months.

spanking/time-outs/all out chaos!

Just tried my best. With DS1 with ADHD and difficult to manage, I did what I could to suit each child.

public school/private school

Catholic school for primary, state schools for secondary

schooling/homeschooling/unschooling

schooling

long hair/short hair/crew cuts

Went with the flow of what the child wanted - although with DD, I did delay cutting her very long hair until she was around 8 or 9 years old. She could sit on it. DS2 had almost no hair at first, and it grew slowly into lovely curls so I did not cut it until he was around 5 years old.

crib from birth in own room/baby shares parents room/family bed

Bassinet and later cot in the same room as us. Often, baby would co-sleep for part of the night.

day care/in-home care/family only care

My in-laws cared for the children when I worked. Later on, my husband did, with the youngest one.

working mom/stay-at-home mom/work-at-home mom

Would have loved to be a SAHM, but with me able to earn a good salary, and DH not being in that position, it was the only way was for me to work. I did work at home for a couple of years when DS2 was little, tutoring students.

early solids/ late solids

I did not offer solids until around six months, and then the introduction was slow, not even every day at first.

jarred baby food/home-made baby food/ straight to table food

Table fod. Bought baby food once, which the baby turned away from and would not eat.

pets/no pets

My husband did not want pets, but I eventually got a dog, which the children loved so much in their growing up years. DH loved her too.

formula/occasional formula/never a drop

Never a drop. Actually after DD was born, and I did not see her until the next day, she had been offered formula, but refused the bottle.

organic food/healthy food/processed food/junk food

Mostly home cooked healthy basic food.

vegetarian/meat eating

We do eat meat, but we did not always eat it every day.

Are you aware that current recommendation for SIDS prevention recommend that babies sleep in the same room as the mother in first 6 months? I know your baby is old enough that this is no longer a concern but since I don't know where your baby sleep as an infant just wanted to make sure you (and any lurkers) are aware of this if you have a future children.

vaccinating/altered schedule/non-vaccinating

Fully vaccinated; a few vaccines delayed or spread out/separated.

disposable diapers/cloth diapers/elimination training

Disposable only. Did lots of research on cloth diapering, just not interested enough in it.

attachment parenting/mainstream parenting

Mostly AP, but had to teach myself to enjoy it, and make it become instinct, because it was not at first.

parented to sleep/sleep training/cry it out

I guess "sleep training" is the closest description to what I've done, in that I have always fostered consistent bed and nap times, and don't allow babies/toddlers to go without naps or stay up too late. But I tried to avoid CIO, or any crying, really.

baby carriers, slings, wraps/strollers

All? LOL. I wore each baby in slings and/or carriers, and each rode in strollers sometimes too. I prefer to wear a baby/toddler, but strollers are fine with me when needed.

rear-facing car seats till you have to turn/forward-facing as soon as possible

One child rear-faced until 27 months, when he was just under the RF weight limit for his seat; the other is RF at almost 30 months, and is still well under the RF limit for her seat, so she'll stay that way a long time.

spanking/time-outs/all out chaos!

I've tried them all. I like structure and order, and sometimes time-out (used sparingly) helps me achieve it.

public school/private school

Private preschool thus far; my older child will be starting kindergarten at a (public) charter school for combination traditional and homeschooling in the fall. My younger one will probably do a couple of years in the same private preschool when she's ready, and then follow her brother to the charter school.

schooling/homeschooling/unschooling

See above; my children, once in kindergarten, will be receiving about half traditional schooling and half homeschooling.

long hair/short hair/crew cuts

My son has a "little boy haircut" (that's what we ask for at the barber shop), and my daughter has long hair, about the middle of her back. I'd like to maintain a short hairstyle on my son while he's very young, but later on, when he can care for it himself, he's free to have his hair any way he likes it. It's only hair.

crib from birth in own room/baby shares parents room/family bed

Both babies were in my room with me from birth through 7 months and 8 months, respectively. My older one slept in a bassinet and later a crib, side-carred with my bed. My younger one moved around between her bassinet and my bed as needed.

day care/in-home care/family only care

N/A, as I am a full-time SAHM. But they have stayed with DH's parents when we've needed childcare on rare occasions.

working mom/stay-at-home mom/work-at-home mom

See above.

early solids/ late solids

Both babies started solids between 6 and 7 months old.

jarred baby food/home-made baby food/ straight to table food

Older child hated baby food, but had mostly jarred when he did eat it; I only made about 1/3 of his food myself. Younger child had 100% mom-made foods.

pets/no pets

We have one dog, who was already a couple of years old when we had our first child. We also had a bird from before parenthood, and kept him through our first baby's first year, but had to re-home him because his upkeep was overwhelming after we became parents.

formula/occasional formula/never a drop

Never a drop.

organic food/healthy food/processed food/junk food

Healthy food always, very little junk food at all. Organic when I can afford it, but it's not a priority.

vegetarian/meat eating

Meat-eating, but only about 3 times per week. We always have Meatless Monday, and several other meatless meals as well.

organic clothing/all cotton clothing/polyester

Mostly all-cotton, but I'm not very picky about clothes. Most of what my children wear is second-hand, and it can be catch-as-catch-can when you shop that way. DH and I wear mostly cotton clothing as well.

recycle occasionally/recyle everything/what's recycling?

Recycle most things. We save jars and boxes like it's our job, because we always find a new use for them.

mom does most of the child-related care/dad does most of the child related care/shared evenly

Mom does most of it. DH works long hours at his job, and has most of the home-upkeep (repairs, etc.) responsibility, while I do most of the housework (cleaning, cooking, etc.).

country-living/small-town/big-city

We live in an urban (but not inner-city) neighborhood in a city of about 1 million people.

econo-car/big SUV

One old, very fuel efficient compact car, and one reasonably fuel-efficient medium SUV.
