Does using formula have long-term effects?

Most formula-feeding moms will tell you to just look at the FF babies around you and don't they all look healthy? But what are the long-term effects of using formula? Here's one...

A recent study found that:

...compared to the low-iron group children, the iron-fortified group scored lower on every 10-year outcome measured.

It looks like this study addresses only those infants who had higher than average iron levels to begin with. That said, this study really shows how the widespread introduction of infant formula has been a huge human experiment, with infants acting as the guinea pigs.

There seems to be this idea that commercial formula has been developed to give infants all the nutrients that they need at the right levels, but the reality is, we don't know yet what nutrients infants need or the right levels for those nutrients.

Scary stuff.

It sounds like babies who get extra iron when they do not need it suffer as a result. Although it has not ha that effect on the babies who did need the extra iron.

While i agree that the study seems to make sense and that no one product or ingredient can give us all the nutrients we need save for breastmilk I would also like to point out that the average baby breast feeds maybe to the age of two. That being said, just a short period of time on breast milk is all that is needed to jump start certain biological functions inside a child.

Breastfeeding simply and most straightforwardly, helps begin biological functions in a baby, it gifts no protection it simply stimulates natural protection inside a human,it gifts no cures,no gaurantees and it is no rubiks cube of nutrition it is simply and humbly the stuff of which was designed for and evolved for human animals. All breastfeeding has going for it biologically speaking is that it has been around since the dawn of man.

I did a litttle reading and I found out that nestle made one of the first baby formulas and that goes back to 1867! That is how long baby formula has been around. That is simply not long enough,SO I do understand why people are blaise about it because quite literally it has been around since any of us can rememebr and beyond.

>When I teach, I do sometimes wonder if it would be interesting to see which children were exclusively breastfed and which ones were combo or formula fed. I especially wonder about those students at our school in the Special Ed unit. Were they breastfed or not?<<

I can give feedback for these questions.

I do get that there would be babies with other problems who would also not have the co-ordination to nurse well. Perhaps in days gone by, that meant a much shorter life for some of these children, sadly. Now, they can survive, and with the right assistance, learn as well.

What you have given me is anecdotal, about one child. If it caqme to that, my children were all breastfed, and certainly were not stars of the classroom. That is anecdotal also. I do mean much larger studies. And studies that fully tease out - never breastfed, vs. breastfed for shroter times, like your baby, vs. breastfed for longer times.

You're right about formula being available for
