I think there's an explanation for this.  When you're taking a medicine, it is extremely obvious that that substance has significant effects on human health--after all, that is the whole reason you're taking it.  So if I'm taking Percocet (post-C-section), or Sudafed, or whatever, I can actually feel that the substance is having huge effects on my body and brain, and that gives rise to a visceral sense that I should be concerned about giving that substance to my baby. 

In contrast, when I read about some chemical I've never heard of that's present in formula--or, for that matter, some environmental chemical I've never heard of that some article tells me might be making it into my breast milk--I don't really have much reason to think it has significant effects on human health one way or the other.  So the tendency is just not to think about it all that much.
