Pope Francis condones public breastfeeding!!!!!: "There are so many children that cry because they are hungry. At the Wednesday General Audience the other day there was a young mother behind one of the barriers with a baby that was just a few months old. The child was crying its eyes out as I came past. The mother was caressing it. I said to her: madam, I think the child’s hungry. “Yes, it’s probably time…” she replied. “Please give it something to eat!” I said. She was shy and didn’t want to breastfeed in public, while the Pope was passing. I wish to say the same to humanity: give people something to eat! That woman had milk to give to her child; we have enough food in the world to feed everyone."

USAToday ran an article about the Church exception in the Massachusett's Breastfeeding Law.

I am so glad that the Pope was vocal about breastfeeding in public!

The interesection between religion and breastfeeding is fascinating.

Breastfeeding is kosher and allowed in synogogue. http://www.amotherinisrael.com/breastfeeding-shul-synagogue/

Liberally religions, such as Unitarian Universalism, are pro-breastfeeding. http://www.uua.org/statements/statements/185320.shtml

The Catholic Church has declared itself pro-breastfeeding for decades (if not longer). http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/speeches/1995/may/documents/hf_jp-ii_spe_19950512_accademia-scienze_en.html

But it isn't black and white. One sticky point in developing laws protecting breastfeeding in Massachusetts was religious organizations demanding the right to prohit breastfeeding in churches. Ultimately the proponents gave in and allowed a religious exception. Go figure. https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXVI/Chapter111/Section221

Standing Ovation! I think it's wonderful that he has made a comment like that; it will go a long way toward making public breastfeeding more accepted.
