NIP Article - reader's comments

Here's an seemingly innocent article on a nurse-in at an Applebees. However, if you read the reader comments...boy oh boy! Talk about some ignorant remarks. One of them even equated NIP to smoking! Unbelievable. I thought it would be a good thing to discuss on here, especially since our resident FF/anti-NIP'ers are feeling underrepresented.

BF'ers, be prepared to be astounded.

So, I do wonder how several women here in response to my post have said that their babies simply refused a bottle.
For real???? I really have to do this???

No, but you're claiming that "most" don't, and that I am an "exception to the rule". YOUR words, not mine! Did you take a poll of BF moms to come to your conclusions, or are you basing this only on your experiences? I'm speaking for myself, and I can tell you that your recommended methods would never work for ME. I said nothing about the rest of the BF population, but you have done so, several times now.

I "brandish" it? Well, pardon me if I find that kind of insulting. This is the way my body works, and it's doing good things for me and my child. Whether my experience is within your realm of understanding or not, it's real and valid.
I became engorged too, but I dealt with it.

BFing is certainly not healthier than one feeding of EBM

And I'm not willing to limit my life by not NIP when BM from the tap is ready to be consummed in a manner that will pacify baby and allow my body to operate as it was intended to. It's really so simple!
"...NIP still makes most others uncomfortable. "
And as long as the marginalization of NIP continues by those who use bottles for public feedings, (DO you label the bottles so that the people for whom you are doing so much know that you are feeding breast milk and not formula?) and the *normalization* of formula feeding is reinforced by those using bottles continues, it stands little chance of ending.
I offered you suggestions, take them or leave them! YOU are the one saying that a BF mom has to offer EBM if she has other children, and it simply isn't true. There are numerous ways to continue BF any and all children you might have, and you're only limited by your own willingness to try different things in order to make it work.
And yes, any time the child is fed from something *other than* the breast itself, the risks increase. The child may still be getting Mom's milk, but the act of using a bottle creates risk where it did not exist before.
Scroll down to the bottom of this page to see a side-by-side comparison of feeding throught breast and bottle (the bottle issues are true no matter what's in the bottle, BTW). It's the bottle itself that cause problems, the substance inside it may be a whole different story. A pump, BTW, will not work as well as a baby's mouth, so that's another issue there. Pumping for EBM in a bottle is not the same as EBF *at the breast*, FYI.
