We've all seen them...parents driving around with a car load of kids..none of whom are buckled up. It's illegal up here...as I personally think it should be..but while we're on the subject of "acceptable risk"...is this not an area where we should allow the parents to decide if the risk is "acceptable" for their children? Drives me nuts to see unbuckled kids frankly...but parents who don't do it will argue until they're blue in the face that it's the best thing for their child, and that for whatever reason the "risk" is acceptable...despite evidence to the contrary...kind of like another subject we've been discussing...;).

The problem with that is children can't be held responsible for themselves.

Giving a baby formula won't result in death, but riding around in a car w/o a carseat can.

Statistic wise, though, I bet there are more infants/young children that die due to lack of car seats than children who are ff.

Meant to say, there are more children who die due to lack of car seats than children who die because of formula.

Exactly what I was thinking...am I the only one who thinks it's ridiculous to compare letting a little one run around unrestrained in a moving motor vehicle and formula feeding? Apples to oranges, IMO!

"Giving a baby formula won't result in death, but riding around in a car w/o a carseat can."

I disagree. Riding around in a car with no carseat will only SOMETIMES result in death, and only in some accidents. Just like using formula will SOMETIMES result in death, in SOME circumstances (like say the much higher rate of NEC in preemies, or a baby being the unfortunate one to be given a recalled batch for a bad recall, or someone whose parent didn't mix it up properly).

I agree but what makes me more frustrated is parents who think its ok for their baby to not be in a carseat, instead just buckle them in a carseat. I have seen the affects of what happens to a small child who has been in a accedent, just wearing a seatbelt instead of being in a weight apporiate carseat. Although I don't justify either but it is safer to have a young child withought a seatbelt at all then to have it just in a seatbelt without a carseat.

You just hit a nerve and it totally makes me mad that parents take the safety of their children so lightly.
