Posting photos of nursing babies online

On another board, a poster has a long siggy that includes a slideshow of nursing babies from her playgroup. Another poster took offense at it and there has been quite the debate over the appropriateness of the siggy. I posted a message inviting people here to discuss that issue, and I hope that one of the posters from that particular playgroup comes here, at least so we can see what the siggy looks like. I'm having a hard time forming coherent thoughts today, LOL! So don't worry if I don't come back to debate the issue with you, I'm trying to get out of the office so I can go home & sleep.

As "Linda Richmond" (aka Mike Myers) from SNL would say, "talk amongst yourselves."

I agree with your right to disagree. I do understand your point, but I don't share it.

They may both be natural, but giving birth happens, at most, once a year. Most women only perform this act a handful of times in their lifetime. And for most (not all but most), there is sufficient warning that it is going to happen to allow for sufficient time to get to an appropriate place to birth your baby.
But breastfeeding happens ALL THE TIME! At least every 2 hours if not more often. A lot of babies give little to no warning that they are hungry, they just start crying and want to be fed NOW. It can make it very difficult to get to an "appropriate place" to feed your baby, especially when not all public places offer an "appropriate place". So the need to breastfeed in public happens a million times more often than the need to birth in public. Unless you are one of those moms who never leaves her home during the duration of breastfeeding age in your infant but that is highly impractical for most moms.
It is for this reason that your comparison above is like comparing oranges to apples and really doesn't apply.

This statement tells me that your father has a VERY sexual mindset towards breasts and it's this sort of mindset in society that makes NIP such a highly controversial and highly debated topic. My whole point is if people could just get past their sexual hang-ups about breasts, this topic would never need to be debated again. It would be completely socially acceptable to see breasts being used to feed a baby. But alas, it is very hard and takes a very long time to change the views of society so therefore I imagine we will be debating this very thing for a very long time.

I wanted to add that the siggie is on a message boards for mothers, on a parenting site. If such a picture showed up on a non parenting site, I can see where it would be more inappropriate with a huge outcry about why it is there. There is no more appropriate place than on a site for mothers specifically.

Very good point. It's also interesting to note that when those stories come on the news about a mom giving birth in a car on the way to the hospital, she's not chastised for "doing that" in public. If a mom gives birth in the middle of a mall, it's generally accepted that labor progressed rather quickly and her only option was to have the baby right then and there. She's not being "rude" and "disrespectful."
